SM7 seems to be one of the most respected budget mics around here...
Many members are curious about it (myself included) -and the Michael Jackson reference is getting old-...

What do you say if owners post clips or mixes using the SM7 (on vox, cabs or whatever)?

That could be really helpful to many members! Thanks!

I'll plug a CD. Listen to the Tim O'Reagan (Jayhawks drummer, songwriter and singer) solo CD. All vocals (and most of the guitars, other instruments and some of the drums) are through one of my SM7s. Drum overheads are a pair of AT-4050s. Kick is a D6. Some songs off the album are on his myspace page.

Sounds great... real pro! Which pres did you used?

Vocals and bass guitar on this track are an SM7B:

Wow! Niiiicee!

Did you recorded that? Tell us about that session!

Edit: It sounds a little crushed, and the hats seems to be a little phasey... but the whole package is great!

Yep, I recorded that. It's a band of high school age that were looking for a 5 song set to use on MySpace and as demos to get gigs. What they had before that was really rough!

It was fun for me, 'cuz at 42, I've got kids older then them. But they heard my music--and liked it--and decided I wasn't just an old nerd! They really let me "produce" them, and we changed the way they did a lot of things. In the process, they learned a lot and loved the tracks they got out of it.

And it is squashed. I knew what they wanted in terms of a big squashed sound, so after I mixed all the tracks, I squashed and limited them like they wanted. But without telling them, I did another set of masters with only half the squashing. I played the first mix for them, then the totally squashed mix, and pointed out all the dynamics that were lost. I then played the halfway set and showed them how they could keep some sense of dynamics, but still get the squashed radio sound they wanted.

They liked the compromise and went with the middle set. So believe it or not, that's not as squashed as they could have been!

I understand your pain, WhiteStrat...

Anyway... which pre did you used with the sm7?

Sounds really good, really...

Did you had to edit the drum track much? It sounds tight!

The SM7 was going through my ART MPA Gold (stock tubes). The drums were compressed some, a small amount of eq, and lots of level tweaking--I mic'd everything. Other than that, what you hear is what was tracked except for the kick--I sample replaced the kick drum. Just sounded like wet cardboard no matter what I did.

Hey Dalley! Good stuff, man! Congrats!

Keep them coming, guys! I think I´ll start saving for my SM7! :D

We often talk about the SM7 as a great mic for male vocals, but I'm currently using it for a female singer/songwriter. I liked others better, but after auditioning many of my mics, she liked what the SM7 did for her voice. Here's the first vocal track--just recorded yesterday:

Nice! She kind of remains me to Tori Amos...

I really liked the lead vocals (not that much the backing vocals), but another really good work! :)
