what are peoples thoughts on using an SM58 to record a snare?

No issues other than the ball will get beaten to death...Ive seen them on Bass drum...and not just in a club...but at a Queen concert.

I prefer the SM57...
the SM58 on Bass drums is used to take the "kick" sound, in combination with another cardioid condenser, far away, taking the low end. This is a good combination on bass drums but it's much better with surface pickups directly on the drumhead.

If I remember right, the 58 has a frequency curve that's real similar to the 57.
You should be ok.
my 2c...

Isn't it the exact same microphone except that the spit trap is overtop of the capsule?

They look pretty close to me. I'd think it'd work just fine on snare.

Do ya think the variation would come from the foam screen?

My thought is that if you like the way it works and sounds, then do it. If not, then don't.

Personally, I've never tried it. But that's almost exclusively because I've never found a need for anything other than a 57 on the snare.

i don't own a 57.

i've more or less always used my 58 with the head screwed off...

sounds fine to me :)

Ha, I was about to post those charts Dog breath.

Not sure if you are referring to the screen physically blocking frequencies, or if the average singer singing with his lips on the mic (yuck) gets a slighty difference response due to a proximity effect difference of 3/4". But I would imagine it has little to nothing to do with it, they seem to be engineered to sound different.

Maybe once the foam gets filled up with spit they sound less dry...;)
