I got a really good kit recording once from just one mic.
I didn't expect it to sound so good as it was just a quick take to get a song down,
One SM58 about 15" off the ground about 3 feet in front of the kit aimed just over the top of the kick drum.
The room was an old college class room nearly square, with a high ceiling.
It was very lively, all hard surfaces and the kit was aboout one third of the way down the room.
It was when I came to to a quick mix of this demo that I heard how well balanced the kit sound was.
I've never had the courage to use this technique on an important job yet though.
Coming to think of it though I could always leave a track aside to try it.
It worked once.......
