I came in to a store with the intentions to by a couple of SM57 mics. Then I saw that Shure made another kind of 57 called PG57. This mic was about half as much money and it came with 20 ft of mic cable. What the difference between these two 57's? I don't mind a "little" less quality for half as much. But I don't want half as much quality for half as much. Did that make sense? Haha. Thanks

Get the SM57. It will sound the best and its a good deal. Many years from now you will still be using it and its value will appear to be 10 times what the cheaper version will give you in the short run. Do you want your music to sound great or "pretty good"? Get the SM57.

Buy the SM57. Its already only 80 bucks, so why do you want to go even cheaper than that?

The difference between the two purchases is pretty simple. If you buy the sm57 you will be buying a mic that you will always use even as your mic collection expands to include much more expensive mics.If you buy the pg57 you are buying a mic that you will replace(probably with a sm57)as soon as your budget allows. The pg57 may get you through the night right now but in the long run won't toe the mark. The free cable ain't no big deal as Musician's Friend sells cheap cables for $5.

pg57?

I am in the same boat. I understand everyones loyalty to the great SM57-58 ,we all agree its a great mic, but does any one have an actual bad experience with the PG57? Does it quit after 6 months,3weeks???? does it sound muddy or weak?
If no one has actual data I may be also inclined to try one. Thanks!
