disclaimer:
my guitar and amp leave something to be desired (a better guitar and amp, actually) and i make no claims at actually being a guitar player.

the difference is not as stark as it was on some one else's amp when we did this same thing about a week ago (first band in my sig)
but i still prefer the heil.

see what you think.

the heil responds to transients a bit faster
great care was taken with placement and level, no q or comp.

(esp pay attention to the hi-end)

the 57 just seems more "pinched" to me, and the heil more like a real guitar.

i'd probably have a different opinion if they were on a another amp.

yea, in the end it's not like either would leave you screwed.

Personally I would pick the 57, but its hard to tell how they would mix.

If there was a special interest group for heil mics, would you call it the Sig Heil?

It's hard to tell. You have too much gain, and a bit too much bass boost on the amp.

In this example, the 57 sounds as I would expect - very mid-forward and aggressive. The Heil, by comparison, almost sounds mid-scooped and thin. Hard to tell without knowing what the amp sounded like in the room, but I'd tend to go for the 57 sound, possibly because that's how I've been conditioned to think a distorted guitar "should" sound. ;) I do think the 57 track would fit better in a mix, too.

I think the Heil is a lot warmer and more natural. If I were doing a really simple mic setup for a band with two guitarists, I'd stick the 57 on the lead guitarist and the Heil on the rhythm. The 57 seems to cut better but the Heil is just smoother.

heil panned huh?

can't say i agree.

the 57 is too bassey, and the hi end energy is overly focoused.... all kinda in the same spot to me.

and the hi-end (abouve 5K) is serouusly for shit on the 57.
cat hiss and fizz like mad (course it started on the amp, but the 57 only makes it worse)

for something with a little more time invested. (an entire weekend  ... )

if you click my sig, the first song you'll see is a nt2a and the pr30 (about equal parts) on a solid state crate 1/2 stack.

i would probably go with the 57 track too. of course it's a little flawed because i know what was what but i think that the 57 sounds like it would sit better in the mix. not enough mids in the other one to me. and i'd go with much less gain on the guitar too. i know that is a decision to be made depending on the song but that much gain tends to get muddy in my experience.

I think I've got to go with th 57 here too.

The Heil probably does sound a little more natural, but I just prefer the midrange of the 57.

I totally agree with what is said here.
