Is it possible to get a decent sound using an SM57 on a kick drum?

When it's place on the right spot, with a signal chain that costs around 10000$.
The peppers' blood sugar sex magic's kick is recorded with an sm57, at least that's what many people say...
A D112, beta 52 will do better if you're less experienced and have more low cost gear.
greetz

As in all things, it depends on the drum itself, the drummer playing it and the context of the tune that it sits in. I just tracked a band last week and after going through all the usuall suspects for the kick, ended up with a 57 inside. It's just what worked at the time.

there is no right or wrong mic for any job. you can get a decent sound out the most horrible peice of shit gear, if you know how to use it.

I record my kick with an old speaker inside the kick. I record my snare with a fuckin $2 mic from value village, and i use a shure as on overhead. that is my entire drum mic setup. I have a total lo-fi approach...

an Sm57 will give you a good kick sound, if you learn how to use it...

Sm57

I can't believe the responce that I had tonight!
Better cymbals than low end..One 57 open Room.......

I used an sm57 for awhile and it has a banging on cardboard sound. Plus the drummer had so much blanket in his kick it was silly. With alittle compression it sounds......not as good as the e602 and matter a fact it sounds like shit compared, but i guess you can do it.
