SM57, how long to warm up?

everyone knows that phantom power is specifically used for the recording of EVP's(electronic voice phenomena) whatever you do , dont try it with a living person. but, if you must, first do the dc power thing with the car battery.

you may want to move your studio to an abandoned prison or insanasyslum for best results.
 
57's are alot like pets. You must talk to them regularly in a gentle, loving voice before they really warm up to you. I'm certain the last owner was abusive to this mic you now own. For god sake...when will the abuse end.

What?

My sound card has an auto warming feature. Some how it knows how to heat up the 57 going backwards throught the preamp. Yeah... when it;s done warming up the light on my soundcard goes off and I can turn my phatom power off.

Before I use to ask the recording artist to sit on it for a while. Maybe 15-20 minuites. They would all ask me what it did for the mic. I;d always tell them these baby's dont startup cold.

Mine are always warmed up.

I got my SM57s mail order from a special Chernobyl salvage sale following the nuclear accident there in '86. They used them as intercom mic's. The mic's are great because they're ALWAYS warmed up - warm to the touch actually. They also glow in the dark - so they serve double duty as replacements for the studio lava lamp.

I loved the way they'd stand there for 30 sec's after they'd been sliced open boefre falling down DEAD.

We shouldnt be doing this in such a serious thread....but....bubble gum cards??? And an original one....if there is any way to post it id love to see it. I used to have a whole bunch of em......I went and saw the live 'Shintaro' show at the sydney show ground .....a crack up. They just dont make em like that any more.
Oh ..and I think that they were using sm57s .

If my calculations are correct, it has been about a week now that our friend has been waiting patiently for the SM57 ( phantom power applied) to rise to an acceptable operating temperature.
For god's sake mate...has it warmed up yet???
There have been all manner of sensible and learned suggestions made and the debates that it has raised have been most scintillating. Advice offered has spanned countless areas of expertise from rectal insertion to motor mechanics, from the use of curds to sexual lubricants.
I would suggest that the original author please give us an update and let us know which of the pieces of advice have been helpful. If we have missed the mark, then I'm sure we can pool together yet again and solve this most baffling of conundrums.
If I may offer one last piece of advice...... when it comes to dealing with curds be especially vigilant. Both Little Miss Muffet and Saddam Hussein had kurds in their way, and look what happened to Saddam. The kurds are a wise and proud people.
If any body knows what became of Miss Muffet I would be interested.

Oh that explains it. I hooked my SM57 up to 220v which is probably why the vocalist won't let go of the mic. :)

I'm jealous. My old man wouldn't take me to the tin shed to see him. I wore my black ninja suit for three days straight in protest.

that wasnt a garage sale . it was probably a guuitar center. they are hard to tell apart sometimes. you should have known though by all the sales people teenagers talking on cell phones walking around in circles. if it took you over an hour to buy that one microphone you were definatley there.
 
Mate, thanks for that...u made my day! I havent seen one of them for yonks. I actually had the full set (a few times over) and put together the big picture of shintaro on the back.
Here are some observations and questions .
1 why was the ninja suit only available in black?
2 why did tombe sometimes wear black and sometimes wear the 'good guy' colour?
3 the commercially available ninja hoods were way too big, they didnt look as good as tombe and they were hard to see out of unless ya mum safety pinned it up.
4 the ninja suits last years, I always found mine at regular intervals during my later years in the bottom of my cupboard next to the plastic Beatles wig
5 why dont the canadians( i live in canada now) or the yanks know about the samurai.(prob still smarting about the whole WW2 thing)
6 These posts are still in keeping with the subject at hand....the venerable SM57......I believe that SM stands for SaMurai and the 57 bit is the year of series conception.
7 there was actually a samurai clip that showed shintaro's bare arse as he was stepping into a japanese bath.

I alweays wondered about that. I mean EVERYBODY wanted to be an eganinja but couldn't get the gear (or the cccccoooolllll black lattice undershirt)

Mine was always intrinsicly twirled up with my COMBAT helmet & rifle strap.

The SM57 is the same size as your car's cigarette lighter, after your cell phone is charged up, pull out the charger and simply insert the 'xlr' end of the mic. Ive been warming my mics up like this for years, I just assumed this was common knowledge...but maybe not. I find that after about 200 km the mic is warm enough to record an acoustic guitar, use as a single drum o/h, record a full choir or with the roland 'octo-cable' plug into 8 simultaneous channels from the one mic and record a rock concert in surround sound from the comfort of your concert seat.

Now there was the quintessential quality piece of arsenal. My Combat rifle had the original rat a tat tat plastic gun sound and it lasted for ages. Not like the ones you get today. I was devastated when it lost its sound. Kind of like I felt after I had my vasectomy
The helmet had the netting if I recall.
 
oh dear. youve picked urself a frigid sm57. I had one once. i even dressed up in my leathers and it still diddnt warm up. :D

If he was using a 58 that would be a prob, the metal grill and all, but the 57 has the plastic cap so that you can plug it into 220v, place it to your lips for the proximity effect and no prob with shock.....your vocalist must have been barefoot at the time and standing in the tub.
