SM57, how long to warm up?

The SM57 mod in the latest issue of Tape Op said that 5 minutes in boiling water should do it - with increased bass response and clarity as well.

I also read in the newbie section that a good tube preamp will warm anything up. Something in the $49 to $99 range should work wonders, as long as it has a tube inside of it that you can see glowing.

Man, I sure have learned a lot since hanging out at this forum. It's good to start giving back. :D

Does the SM stand for Spanish and Mexicans or Sado Masochism? I believe originally it was called the S and M 57, so the latter would probably be true. Its sensual shape also suggests the latter.
I think this should clear things up.

You should all know (since it is common knowlege) that if you run a 57 under hot water, or even put it near water, it will blow the buss fuse, and good luck trying to find a fuse for a sm57.

Of course, the back up use for an SM57 has always been to hammer nails with it. Don't worry, it will still work afterwards.

Kev-

well i've heard that you can only use the sm57 in 100 degrees weather, just leave it on the dashboard of your car in the afternoon and it'll be warm and ready for recording in the evening

So THAT's where you put it to warm it up!!

no no no, your all wrong...
The sm57 is a bi-polar symbiotic feedback device and therefore needs no phantom power. Merely an electro mechanical pulse in order to function properly. Pulse frequency applied is typically 20-20000 Hz, reciprocal response however is usually within 80-18000Hz.
Calibration can be achieved through rectal insertion followed by a gaseous infusion ,finely balanced with a dudicious application of nasal sensory feedback.....

I'm sorry, my attention span is too short and I'm also too lazy to read and comprehend that.

Are you saying "shoot it with a phaser"?

...geek... :D

Dear MCI2424

I am so sorry for the treatment you have received in this thread. Certain people (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!) have taken it upon themselves to "Openly" mock you.
Remember:
Being an asshol_ is its own punishment.

That being said, the SM57 does has feelings.
It may never warm up to you.
You can try phantom power, Ghost power, Goblin power, whatever!
But the bottom line is its just not that into you.

yeah i like edgeguy's strategy of "unopenly" mocking you so im ganna use it too
in this case i wouldnt say its phatom power you need, maybe its dc. Try cranking up your car and putting jumpcables on the battery then with a sturdy grip on the mic clamp the posative down near the xlr and then with your other hand grab the negative clamp and start bringing it to the mic. if you get that far alive give me a post and ill tell you what to do from there ;)

Picture says it all

:D :D :D :p

oh yeah, I almost forgot, you might try sliding one of those wind sock/popfilters over it. The yellow ones generate more heat by the way.

How long - about a yard.
If phantom power isn't enough try Phantom Agent Power - those whacky Sino Thespians who thrilled us with their zany antics as a pseudo ninja SAS way back in the Black n White 60's could power up any Tom, Dick or Mic.
Theor catch phrase..."Guns are a last resort - remember - we're PHANTYOM AGENTS" light up the imagination of a generation of baby boomers not smarting from the cataclysmic cutltural clash that was the War In The Pacific.
Yes, Phantom Agent Power & if you like that there's also "The Samurai" - warning some assembly required.
Oh, there is the possibility that "el Mick est morte"

I think u r on to something there. Phantom power for condensors, phantom agent power for dynamics. By the way as a 'Samurai' fan does 'Tombay the Mist ring any bells? (Shintaro's sidekick, one of the iga ninjas I think)

Shusaku, Shusaku! Where are you?
Remember the little boy who went to the ninja school after his dad went missing & Shintaro took him with him? The same episode that the map to the Major's legendary golden treasure was stolen. That was before Tombe (the Mist often mistaken for Tonto) came into the story.
Shintaro Okikusa.
I have a couple of DVDs & a video PLUS 1 original bubble gum collector's card of the GREAT man!
hai, hai.
I loved the way they'd stand there for 30 sec's after they'd been sliced open before falling down DEAD.
Hai, hai.
I also have 4 episode of the Phantom Agents on vid. Tres cool.

KY just came out with this new warming sensations lubricant. Just rub some of that on there. It serves a dual purpose, first it warms it up, and second it makes it easier to fit into small orifices.
