I got one at a yard sale. How long do these things take to warm up usually?

I applied phantom power last friday and I am still waiting for some sound.

Thanks so much.

I'm looking for a sand box for the kids. Do you know if the have one at the garage sale.

I usually start mine up 15 to 20 mins before im ready to use it...The type of cable feeding it will sometimes make a differance too...smaller cables wont allow as much phantom power to make it to the mic. Other factors might include what you will be mic'ing. 57's can be stubborn....think about it...if you were about to be placed on a drum...and you thought someone would be swinging sticks in your direction...it would probably take you a few mins to get up the nerve to just stand there. But...if you were about to have a beautiful lady sing softly to you...you might not need so much time to compose yourself...just remember man...SM57's are people too...treat them the way you would like to be treated and they will serve you well for years...

those won't accept the standard 48v...you'll need 58v for that mic.

It depends. If the mic is being used on a stand, it's ready right away. But if you're swinging the mic around a la Roger Daltry, then you need to wait until the transformer heats up. This is because a transformer under load that is swung creates, through magnetic inductance, a flux capacitor.

How long you need to wait depends on your orientation to the Earth's magnetic field, described by this equation:

1/sec = (90 / pi) * sin (latitude in radians)

Why do you want to fuck with this guy?...you know damn well the it has a flux modulator, not flux capacitor!!

I didn't say it had a flux capacitor, I said it acted like one.

Damn n00bs. Where did you get your EE, the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology? :p

The SM57 doesn't use phantom power. It doesn't have a warm up time. It might have a short break in period if brand new. If you aren't getting any sound make sure you have a preamp and that you are not running it directly to your sound card.

No need to wait. Just put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Be sure you disconnect it from the mixer first.

You need to ad a popfilter, it usually gets it going

Wrap it up in a hot, damp towel. Change the towel every 10 minutes or so.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Run it under warm water for a 3 min. Make sure to have it plugged in to a non grounded outlet.

Baste the sm57 in a warm goo
Place in oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown
Serve with red wine and cheatoes.

I'm glad you said red wine! White wine with Cheetos would have been SO inappropriate!

I think you're all missing the point. If he applied phantom power last Friday, then the chances are that the mic is already TOO warm. The only remedy at this stage would be to hold the pre-heated mic in a bottle of milk. The curdling effect will really bring out the creamy, dare I say, analog sound you've wanted your whole life.

See - every cloud ... !

Make sure you turn the phantom power on, but leave it in standby for 10 minutes to warm up the tubes in the SM57.

Tell it a funny joke to lighten the mood. Then say sweet things to it, gently caress it, and keep an adoring gaze on it for a good 10 minutes. That should warm it up and get it ready to handle.

:D

Seriously, I read your post and I thought, "Are you sure it's not broken?" Even through my Crapinger pres, my 57 has no problem with levels.

I've seen so many popping up at yard sales! Alongside API modules and blackface 1176s. The 57 model is so unreliable. There were alot of upgrades done the next year to the newer 58 model, but it really didn't hit until 81. There's alot of hype towards this '07 model though! It really should be a wireless, for studio use.

Maybe you have a 57 from the old Shure "frigid" line! Those things never warm up.

As a matter of fact (if it worked at one time) it would always stop working and you would never get anything out of it again if you said another mic was pretty.

God forbid you told it that the mic stand made it look fat!

I have to appologize to you MCI2424 for the others...here's the real answer:

Do you have the SM57 or the SM57.1 ? The new version (SM57.1) has a battery operated heater core that shuts down automatically. If you have the standard SM57, then the fastest way to heat it is with a blow-torch. 'Yes', a blow torch. Keep the flame on the capsule until it glows red, then place your lips over the capsule during your mic check.
