Although the Shure SM57 is considered the 'standard' for mic'ing and recording guitar amps, I'm just not happy with its performance.

So I'm wondering, what are your guys' opinions on alternatives to the old faithful SM57...??

If you want other alternative mics for amps, some good ones are [ in order of price ]:

Studio Projects B1
Red5 Audio RV8
Audio-Technica AT4040
Sennheiser MD421
Beyer M160

Though, you also might want to consider your mic preamp. A 57 through a good mic pre is a totally different mic than a 57 through a cheap preamp.

I have several ATM23 and they are great on amps, snare, and small toms.

They are almost not distinguishable from a Beyer M201 on snare.

another AT mic....the ATM29he....I have 3 of them and i love'em...and full compass probably still has them for $45 each...I gave twice that from musicians friend...:(

i got a sennheiser e609 for like 90$ new i sometimes use it on guitar.
