SM-57 question

I have an SM-57 mic. I also have a mic preamp for it so I can plug it into my soundcard. I was wondering should I use my preamp's phantom power or not with the SM-57? What is phantom power anyway?

your sm57 doesn't need it, but it won't hurt it either
