I have a Pentium III 600MHz, 128 RAM (upgradable with pcmcia??), 40Gig, USB 1.1 laptop which I want to use to record. Is it even worth buying an interface for such a slow computer? Or would it just give me problems.

I just "retired" my old 600 mhz P-III desktop, I was running windows 2000 professional on it, and had 384 mb ram, using SAWStudio and a Delta 1010 I was able to get 16 to 18 tracks going at 24/44.1, this was with 5 band eq on every track, plus around 12 compressors along with 2 delays (all on seperate tracks), as well as a reverb, a delay, and a chorus on 3 auxes.

If you can add more ram, and have a pcmcia slot, you should be able to get a firewire card for it and use something like a MOTU 828MKII or an 896HD.

I don't see why it wouldn't give you at least 14 or 16 tracks unless you can't add more ram.

If you have a more capable desktop right now, you could try installing your recording software onto the laptop, and transferring a song onto it by way of CD-R, and see just how many 16 bit tracks it'll run using the stock soundcard.

The question is what OS can you get to run on that.

If it's XP, then you'll have no memory left over to do anything half serious in audio.

98? Not a great option either. A lot of modern sequencer programs don't run on the older OSs

I agree with the BULL here, you're probably gonna want to use win2000 on that machine, unless it can take at least 512 mb of ram, then you could run XP if you wanted.

hard to say

With computers and al of their different compnonent its hard to know what will work well. But.. I use my old trusted PIII 6000EB with 384 of ram, using XP with a Ego Sys Wami Rack and it performs great. I sometimes get opportunties to compose for commercial use and have made and sold tunes using this computer.

I built it myself geez.. 4 years ago and I own newer computers and am not amazingly impressed with the performance. Anyway - as its a laptop, it could cause you headaches, but maybe it is useful as a 2-track editor (assistant computer) I know Rebirth - if you can still get it - wil run on it.
