Slam me...

Garden was recorded by a Three man Band, Jambone, in my Basement Studio. (Studio Sonixx).

Jambone recorded four songs in two days. Total about 16 hours. Basically Jambone set up and played. The Lead is overdoubbed.

What do you think of the Vocal Effect on the Chorus?

Any feedback on the recording quality is appreciated.

Thanks,
-kp-

Great song, the mixing sounded perfect to me. What kind of recording equipment did you use. Sounded right on! The vocals are crystal and love the guitar tone. Did you mic the bass? If so, good job there too. Praises to you.

Dig the solo too.

THe chorus is very cool. I love it. THe effect sounds good on it
I like the mix. Its quite good. As sondriven said, the vocal is nice. It sounds like a cool mic. It clear, but it need some presence to cut through the mix better.

I think the bass guitar needs balls and punchiness.
The low end sounds busy, I think it needs some definition.

This is an incredibly good song, and you did a good job recording them. I think that all yo need now are tweaks.

what effect did you have on the chorus? I like it. HOw many times did you record voices for the chorus

hey thanks CyanJaguar and sondriven...

What kind of recording equipment did you use
SW: Samplitude 2496 Producer
Board: Mackie CR1604-VLZ
Speaker: Mackie HR824
HW: Tango 8x8 20bit and StudIO Card

Did you mic the bass?
Nope. Direct thru a Bass Driver DI and some distortion and compressed using Waves RCL plugin

I think the bass guitar needs balls and punchiness.
The low end sounds busy, I think it needs some definition.
yea, it could use some work. i feel a new set of strings would have helped a lot.

this bass player is a busy player kind of guy. live, they did a lot of jamming and his busy-ness works there.

do you have a Band's Bass Tone in mind or a song i could listen to?

what effect did you have on the chorus? I like it. How many times did you record voices for the chorus
the Vocal Chorus Effect is a DSP FX Chorus Plugin set to Vocal Combo Loose and tweaked

three vocal takes of the same (1-center 1-hard panned left and right) and one harmony up the center. the panned takes i think really added to the quality

the vocal is nice. It sounds like a cool mic. It clear, but it need some presence to cut through the mix better.
i don't know. do you really think so? i'm usually concerned about the Ice-Pick so maybe i backed off too much.

Gone is another Jambone song, i welcome your feedback and anyone else that wants to take the time.

Thanks... :)

hey,
I listened to gone. THe vocal bang in the center sounds nice. Compared to garden, it has some honkiness.

I really like your overall vocal sound. What mic are you using?
I really like your overall vocal sound. What mic are you using?

I like the fact that I can hear a soundstage around the vox. Thats something I strive for but cant get. Did you have any delay on the lead vox in gone? I also like the volume in the mix. The guitar solo is pretty good.

Pretty good mix. THe low end still needs punchiness. When I say that, I am comparing to Fuel or any comercial record.

I really like the live sound you've got going on here. The vocals, bass, and drums sound real good. As I mentioned in your thread in the guitar forum, I don't care for the guitar tone on Gone at all though...it's not in the same space...it sounds like you used a single ambient mic in a bedroom. That's just what it *sounds* like, I'm not making any guesses, maybe it's bad reverb.

Now the guitar tone in Garden is a lot cooler. Maybe you recorded it the same way, but it sure sounds better to me. I really like the feel of this song too, it's very Zepplin. The stereo effect on the guitar is cool but it might be a little distracting during the vocal verses. I like the vocals during the chorus. You know, I hear some creepy backwards leadins on these vocals...that would be cool.

I like Xonix very much!

CyanJaguar and Slackmaster2K,

again...thanks for the feedback...

What mic are you using?
I looked through my notes and i didn't write it down. i think we went through several and if memory serves it was either an AT4033 or an EV757.

Did you have any delay on the lead vox in gone?
No delay but a healthy Pre-Delay on the Reverb. The reverb is the Timeworks 4080L plugin with a Pre-Delay set to 87.

THe low end still needs punchiness.
I agree 100%. i've probably spent more time there than just about any other range. i don't think i'll ever be satisfied with the bottom end.

I don't care for the guitar tone on Gone at all though...it's not in the same space...it sounds like you used a single ambient mic in a bedroom.
Yea I hear it. Maybe it's got too much reverb. Maybe the Reverbs too deep. Now that you mention it, it doesn't sound like it in the same Sonic Space. It's amazing how I can listen to these a Zillion times and not hear it until it's pointed out. Thanks.

What do you think about the Gtr Lead at the end of Gone?

Gone...

I liked the mix a lot, it really jumps out of the speakers. I can hear every instrument, it's
uncluttered. The only criticism I have is perhaps the guitar tone could have a bit more body (maybe
that would be bass, I'm not sure exactly what it needs, I suspect you are a LOT better at this than I).

I think it's quite a good song compositionally
and it's well executed
with a lot of energy. There are just a few moments
where the vocal performance seems to sag a teeny bit. Just milliseconds, like maybe he needed to
take a breath. The guitar is very well played, but I thought he had a somewhat limited vocabulary in
the leads. The harmoniser effect towards the end was cool.

Agree with the other person who said
the bass is somewhat busy, he's basically playing
the same line as the guitar, maybe something a
little different and more 'bedrock'y would add
power to the song.

I listened to 'Garden'...

couldn't really fault the mix much. Something was bothering me about the bass all the way through but I eventually realised it was being played with a pick, so it (especially the busier bits) has a bit more attack then I like. But I guess thats a personal thing. Given the same mix to do, I would blend a bit off miked bass cabinet in with the direct signal and also bring the overall bass volume down.

I am listening through a pair of HR824's and the guitars and drums sound really well on this track. I love that tremolo effect or whatever it is. I also dig the ending alot.

I'm on the third listen now and I have to say the bass tone is bothering me more with each listen...maybe it's the sound you wanted personally but I'd like to hear a version of this with alot less attack and more body if you know what I mean.

Anyway, kudos...great song.

Cool size function

For some reason my Media Player doesn't recognize the file format.   Otherwise, I'd probably comment.

drums?

Are these real drums if not what program is it how did you sequence them??? they sound great

hey mattman925,

thanks...

the kit is all real

the drummer has a really good set. they were custom made for him by a local guy and he's pretty good at tuning them.

here's the micing setup:

kick - D112 (1)
front head on and mic'd at the front head port

snare - SM57 (1)

toms - SM57 (3)

overheads - 4033 (1) and 4050 (1)

kit processing includes:
compressed kick
compressed snare
gated toms
room reverb on the overheads and roll off at ~200Hz

I listened to "garden" and "gone", the recording was nice and clear and the tunes were cool. It pretty much sounds professional, for the most part. There is something that sounds a bit raw, but thats probably a good thing. I liked your songs, and I'm glad i checked them out. It's nice to hear real drums, in a world were I mostly hear electric beats and loops and stuff like that.

keep it real. (even though i use electric drums because of my neighbours, I had some people thinking they were real. I can
hear the fakeness in my drums when I hear something like this.
thanks.................

thanks Mr Sabbath,

i wanted a more live feel to the tunes. i hope i achieved it.

what was the RAW something you mentioned.

now, Xonix is a totally different matter. totally electronic using a keyboard.
