SL3 Vs SX3

I'm getting ready to buy a copy of Cubase but wanted to know, in laymen's terms, the real difference between the 2 besides the 20 new features SXL offers and the 300 dollar jump?

Is SX3 really that much better to cost almost double? If it is, I'll look at it more seriously but I'm leaning towards SL3.

Any insights or tips?

I'm still kind of a newb with SL3.0, but so far it does everything I need it to do, and then some... Steinberg has a forum (temporarily down today) and there's a sticky posted discussing this topic.

I think of SX as more of a "pro" package with additional inserts, effects, sends, and video (surround sound) stuff. I think of SL as a "serious" home studio package... I may be off, but that's kinda how I see it.

SL is still very powerful and puts out quality music just as well as SX. I may eventually upgrade, but I've still got areas of SL I haven't even explored yet.

I upgraded, but I am kind of a power user. SX adds more inserts, more effets sends, outboard effects sends that are delay compensated, the ability to process a plugin on a file directly instead of through a real time insert or send, an input mixer, phase reverse buttons, extended mixer views, lanes, and probably some other things as well. Those are just some of the things that I wanted that made me do the upgrade. However, all that said, SL is still very capable and very powerful. I guess for me I did not look at it as $300 more. I look at the whole purchase in more broad terms like what else in my studio offers me so much usability, flexibility, power etc... for only $600?

Typically I tell people to start with SL anyhow. See if you need more with the less expensive package. If you find you do need more, than pay the $300 to upgrade. It doesn't cost any more in the end than buying SX outright, but you just might save yourself 50% if you do just need SL:D
 
Hi NoShame, do you have a link to that Steinberg forum, I was unable to find it. Hopefully it's up soon. Thanks for the advice. I'm more than new to it, as I've only seen it in action but have never sat with it. I'm still trying to figure out of I'll use those extra features.

I'm wondering since I'll have the cash in a week, if I should just go gung ho, but like you mentioned, I may not even need all the extra sour cream and chives and find out that I spent more than I should have.

I would like to be a bit of a power user myself. I've been a mixer/workstation recorder for years and am now getting into the PC gear side of things. See, I'm actually coming into about 2 G's next week and that should be enough to get a pretty good home setup, I think. However, I still need at least 2 good condensors, 2 preamps for the condensors, an interface (probably M-Audio pre usb), monitors and the software.

Be warned. There is a lot of Cubase bashing and what I would consider unproductive threads over there. So much so where I've really stopped going there unless I really have a head scratcher. You have to sift through a lot of threads (and useless responses) to find what you're looking for.

xstatic - I am thinking about upgrading from SE. However I am in the UK; you could ship the disc over easily enough but I am not sure how I would pay you. PM me if you like.

Dont forget that SL requires a dongle where SE does not... Just some usefull info ;)
 
My copy of SL3 does have a dongle, and a box. However, if you are upgrading from SE, you may as well just do the upgrade direct. If you are buying from scratch, I can save you a hundred bucks or so.

Oh I know that you are on the up and up on what you have to sell.. You have heard people bitching about the dongle and losing it or what not, I was just giving him a heads up on the Dongle....
 
I know you weren't directly refferring to me Carter. On the same token though I thought that it might not be a bad idea to post details so I didn't start getting comments. PLus, who steals SL when it would be better to steal SX or Nuendo:D
 
I have a dongle for Groove Agent 2, (had to pay an extra £20 for it :() but I think you're right xstatic, you'd do better to sell it to somebody buying from scratch. There'd be all the hassle of getting Steinberg to transfer the licence onto mine.
