I've been recording my own music for about half a year now but I still really have no knowledge of recording other than adding a bit of reverb here and there. I went to these boards to just try and read up on different threads and see if I could learn something but most of the vocabulary just blows me away.

Since there was no sticky with some already in them, I was wondering if you guys could point me into the direction of some well written learning sites for me to get started on.

Also I have a question...

I usually just record vocals and acoustic guitar and my brother just gave me his bass. When I try to record with it though (going from an amp to a mic) I can't get the bass loud enough, and when I do it distorts horribly. I've been watching the meters and they usually only reach -21. And when I try to record at lower volumes... I just get a huge amounts of background noise when I turn the track level up.

I've got really basic gear though so that might be the problem:
Samson C01 Studio Condensor
Presonus TubePre
Acid 4.0

So am I doing something wrong or is it that my gear is just to low quality.

Thank you so much in advance guys.

It's a tuff guess but maybe you don't have the mic close enough to the bass speaker if you are picking up alot of background noise.

You could also use the Presonus as a D/I box for the bass.
