All right, I've read everything I can get my hands on, but still don't understand...
I am trying to devise a system that will record at least 8 tracks at the same time. I understand that adat is a great way to do that, and I have recorded on them before, but what do I need to buy to be able to send them to a computer for mastering? The I/O, bus, AD-DA language is making me insane!!

Also, this is going to be a project studio, and I will need to hear what's been recorded and be able to playback/record at the same time.

pete,

Almost any modern PC can easily handle 8 tracks. Part of the trick is getting the eight signals into it. You need a digital audio interface for this. There are several products on the market that offer at least 8 inputs, and most of these can be piggy-backed for more tracks if the PC has enough room (that is, a free slot to put in another card). Two good examples are the Echo Layla24 and the M Audio Delta 1010. These will allow you to listen back and record simultaneously.
