Simple recording to my pc/mp3 cdrw.Can it be done?

Can someone help me get mp3 ready with my system,I want to record my acoustic guitar and vocals out of my behringer (eurorack mx 802) .
It's a 6 channel mixer with 1/4" main outs.
My pc is a pentium4 , 2GHz gateway almost two years old.

Also my 'system info' says I have a CD-RW drive (E: ).
Does this mean I should be able to record my music on cd's with this system,or is it just for data?
Detailed instruction for dummys is about what I need on both the mp3 and CD issues .
I need help verifying that I have items I need to accomplish this.
I'm not looking to buy a bunch of stuff to get this done if it can't be done that's ok.
In summation I need the simplicity of recording with effects at the onset straight into something slightly better than a cassette recorder.
I had a boss br8 years back, and just recently sold a br1600cdrw due to it's complexity.I'm not looking to do any elaborate mix downs,basically almost a live recording session so to speak.

I'm guessing you PC has the stock sound card?

If so you'll need a 2x1/4" mono - 1/8" stereo 'Y' jack so you can plug the mixer Main outputs into the soundcard.

Then you just need some software to record. You can get Tracktion for free here http://guitarplayer.com/freetracktion.htm. It will let you record as many tracks as you want.

Then mix it up to taste, add effects etc, then when ready export to a wav file.

Then just use Nero or a similar burning program to burn the wavs to CD. If you want to convert the wavs to mp3, download a free converter from www.dbpoweramp.com

Bulls Hit; the sound card is stock, I think the little icon that looks like a microphone must be where I would insert the 1/8" stereo jack from my mixer.

I guess then that I do have the burner in my pC?

Don't use the "Mic Input" of your soundcard, use the line-in.
Also, that Behringer has RCA outs right?
You could just use an RCA-1/8" wire.
A couple bucks at Radio Shack.

Then you wouldn't have to worry about getting that "Y" jack.

And yes, your CD-RW drive is the burner.

I guess I was looking at the set up all wrong on the sound card .

My powered speaker set up has two stereo jacks ,pink and green ,I always had the pink one plugged into the pink jack which is obviously wrong since that has the mic icon on it .I don't know why the speaker set up has that jack (an option to go to another unit I guess).Speakers work fine with only the green plugged into the green.

Now I can see that the sound card green (( )) (circle with arrow pointing away from center) is for the speaker out and the blue jack has a (( )) circle with an arrow sort of pointing in like it must be the line in that you mentioned ,only its not two rca ins it looks like an (1/8") line in so I need two go rca Y from mixer to the 1/8" soundcard in I think .Stop me if I've got this wrong .

I wanted to see if I was missing something on that sound card 'in' ,I see by your responce that the 1/8" stereo 'in' is appropriate, I guess some come with variations.
I'll start out with the cheapy first.

I am very weak on file manuevers kinda clueless really, so I need help with what I've done so far:

I downloaded 'Tractionkey' and can't open the file ,the non op notice says it needs a name first before it can be opened.
So I tried givng it a name '1' that's the pc number I had given it when Tracktion asked me for a pc designation back at that site.My own pc is not called one,does this matter?.
Now when I clck 'open' ,there is a quick flash on my screen and then nothing.
 
strat. here is what i use , that some people on this bbs dont like me mentioning. there are even pro tools users using it.

its the only sequencer in its price range that does things like
vocal correction and harmonisation. search in the back posts of this bbs,
and youll see people ive recommended it to are highly impressed.
eg...steve350 in the post by termnl in the midi section of this bbs.
and , before you ask....no ...i dont work for any music software company.
i'm just a user. if your even slightly proficient at midi , youll see immediately the advantages....peace.
 
I succeded in downloading the Krystal audio engine.
I get a vu meter reading plugged into the 'mic' in, but not the 'line' in jack on my stock sound card.Also there is no sound through my pc monitor when I click on the Krystal monitor button using either sound card jack.
When I strum the guitar plugged into the mic jack the vu meter in Krystal goes way up but of course still no sound.
 
what sort of guitar ?
heres the PROPER signal chain for recording for example an electric guitar.
microphone (micing guitar cab)>>>>input of a mixer (eg..yamaha mg)>>>
LINE INPUT of sound card
OR...
electric guitar>>>DI BOX>>>>mixer>>>line input of sound card
OR...
electric guitar>>>a guitar processor(eg...behr vamp, roland whatever)>>>>
line input of sound card (or via a mixer)
for ACOUSTIC GUITAR....
mic on acoustic guitar (eg..LDC)>>>mixer(eg..yamaha mg)>>>line input of
sound card.
MAKE SURE IN WINDOWS MIXER recording dialogue you have line input not muted and the fader is up.peace.
 
no frills recording to mp3...

Hi all,
I'm trying to symplify my request for help on this recording issue.

I need help recording straight into my computer to an mp3 set up that I don't yet have. So I need to know how/where to get the Mp3 online (hopefully free) set up/software.

The final mix comes straight out of my mixer to the cpu 1/8" line in ,that's all I have so far.
I need step by step help on this as I'm not too computer smart.

I don't want to do any kind of mix downs or effects loops just straight into an mp3 set up,almost as if I as if I was line in to a cassette recorder so to speak.One track is plenty.

I have widows XP Home and a stock sound card. Pentium 4 - 2Gb.

strat. as far as i know there is no software that lets you record direct to mp3
from line input.
tho' you might want to check at hitsquad.com in the software section.peace.

A friend of mine has a 300 dollar mp3 player recorder he says will record from a line in,thats how basic I hope to get.

Just like the old cassette recorders.Can I do this with my cd writer(ommiting mp3 al together) if so I need help from click this program from beginning to end or at least the very basic starting out.I don't know how to even find that software if I have it.Don't know how to find or create a 'wav' file either.

ted. i'm really confused what you want to do.
are you wishing to record lots of seperate tracks to a pc ?
ie..multitrack ?
or a one shot deal ? just recording one track ?
or as you play have a cd recorder record ?
tell me IN DETAIL...what you want to do.

Have you ever recorded guitar and vocals straigt from a mixing board into a cassette recorder?
 
ok. one shot deal. well there are several ways. one is to record
to a pc using the old cool edit 96(google for it). save in cool edit to a WAVE file. then use LAME mp3 encoder from hitsquad to encode an mp3.

I googled cool edit 96--its all greek to me.And as I think I mentioned I don't have a clue what a wave file is.

If someone has the time I'd appreciate it.


I need a step by step walk through from beginning to end on how to record to an mp3 from my mixer.One track
no mixing and adding of effects ,just basic as if I was recording one track onto a cassette recorder.
