simple question

i have a mackie mixer and i've got 6 mics running into it, 4 of which require phantom power. the others are an SM57 and an AKG D112. if i turn on the phantom power on the mixer and it powers all channels, will it be harmful to the dynamic mics? or will it not matter whatsoever?
 
No, you'll have no problem sending phantom power to your dynamic mics. They won't feel a thing.

But make sure you don't plug any ribbon mics in there.
 
can I just add that you won't have any problems with running phantom power to your dynamic mics.... IF you use properly balanced XLR cables. A damaged cable, one that is not properly balanced (though not much of a risk of finding one), or using an adapter to go from XLR to 1/4" unbalanced (like a guitar cable plug) could well result in serious problems!

I was under the impression that they didn't send the phantom power to the 1/4 jacks.
 
just curious lil quetsion, Are there any mixing boards that have a seperate phantom power on each channel i.e channel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 have a seperate switch to turn on and off phantom power?
 
yes yes, gidge.. i know i could have found it somewhere else, but i figured it would take one person two minutes to reply with a definant answer to my question. i'm sorry to have inconvenianced you so. please accept my humble apologies.

Virtually every decent mixing board (i.e. over $1000) has that feature you are asking about. Global phantom power switches are mostly a product of the relatively new phenomenon of budget mixing boards, and their never ending quest to cut corners to keep costs down. Mackie is one of the main culprits. (For probably the same reason, Mackie is allergic to polarity switches too.) Another cost-cutting variation is phantom power switchable in groups of 8 preamps at a time.

Getting back to the original question, yeah, it shouldn't hurt any dynamics. And a lot of modern ribbons are immune too - but the older ones will definitely blow up. Tube mics that don't require phantom should be ok with phantom on. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer or read the manual, if available.
