How important is it that the two mics sound similar in an M-S stereo set up? Could I for example, use a 57 as the center mic and an M179 (set to figure-8 obviously)? Would the difference in sound between the two mics affect the recording in any way? Just curious, thanks

Of course it will.

But so what?

That set up will give you a particular sound.

It will sound different than 2 M179's, 1 Fig-8 and one Card.

Try both set ups.

The mic police are busy at the Mtv VMA music awards show anyway.

What......

waddayamean previously taped??

In M/S recording, the center mic does not need to be the same as the side mic. No rule here. You do want the figure 8 pattern to be the same on both sides (which rules out some mics). On the other hand, there's nothing wrong at all with using two of the same mics for MS recording, although you will be using different patterns.
