Hello,

I've had a Motu 828 hooked to my iMac recording on either Audiodesk of Bias Deck for awhile now. Until recently, I mainly recorded by myself, so I would use one input and do multitrack recordings that way. Now I have a band and want to record separate inputs simultaneously to separate tracks.

Can the Motu 828 record multiple inputs simultaneously to separate tracks (i.e., 8 track simultaneous recording)? If so, how? I've tried everything in the book...made sure all my tracks were record enabled and that they corresponded to the inputs I wanted to record from...nada. I cannot seem to get this to work and Motu Tech Support is awful.

So, if any of you use this piece of equipment or have used it, please enlighten me.

Any information is most appreciated.

Thanks!

Doesn't the 828 connect through the firewire interface to your imac?

I'm using 2 MOTU 896's that connect to the PC via firewire interface, and the two units connect via another firewire cable and I am able to record all 16 incoming tracks to different tracks on the PC.

Have you tried getting the lastest driver for Mac ?

Check this post on the MOTU site:
http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/document.2004-10-13.5296571331/view

it has to do with the CueMix software not loading, but maybe it will help you. If you can post some more information on exactly how you are connecting your gear to the MOTU and how you are connecting the MOTU to your MAC then we can prolly help you more :)

motu 828 connections

Timmy J,

Thanks for the reply.

I connect my equipment to the motu using 1/4 cables. I then connect my motu to the imac via firewire.

I've got all of the lastest drivers installed and I can pull up the motu console on both os 9 and os x.

Hypothetically, I connect a guitar, bass, and a drum machine to inputs 1,2, and 3. I record enable the first three tracks and make sure that the first three inputs are going to record to those first three tracks.

When I go to moniter out, I can only hear 1 or 2 tracks at a time and when I press record I can only record to a single track (i.e., the guitar track lays down fine, but the bass and drum machine do not).

This happens in both Audiodesk and Deck Le.

I've tried countless monitering configurations (i.e., through headphones via the front panel of the motu, through powered moniters out of the back of the motu, and through my imac's speakers). I can't even moniter more than one track, much less record to more than one.

I've searched motu's website, thoroughly studied the manual of the motu interface as well as the two multitrack apps I use and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm beginning to think that the 828 is defective.

It should technically be able to record all 8 inputs simultaneously, correct?

Thanks for your help!

Ben

Ben,

Yes, it should be able to record all 8 tracks at one time.

Hmm.. strange one. Maybe the input Busses are not setup properly in the setup of the software that your using. I'm not familiar with the AudioDesk or Deck Le, I use Nuendo 2.2.

Have you tried the CueMix software that comes with the MOTU? You can use that software to route the channels to whichever bus you would like.

Does track 2 & 3 record the same thing that is recorded on track 1?
Does the MOTU 828 have VU meters on the front? If so, can you see the signal on each channel ?

My 896 comes with a couple of different drivers, one is the ASIO driver and the other is the standard MOTU driver. Which one are you using? It should be able to work with both, but you never know..

You can try emaling techsupport@motu.com, I'm currently talking with one otheir representives on a few problems that I have. They responded within a few days.
