I'm a beginner and want to start out on the right path.

Unbalanced and balanced mics: which is better? Whats the advantage and disadvantage of both types? Does the type of recorder (digital or analog) determine what mics you need to use? Is there a way to make a balanced mic unbalanced and vice versa?

Thanks!

Balanced.

Do a search, there must have been a lot of discussion about the subject.

No.

Yes.

If you search, either here or on Google, you'll find tons of info.

couple more questions: If I have the RadioShack XLR to 1/4" adapter/transformer does that make the mic balanced??

I'm looking at buying this: http://www.cdrecordingsoftware.com/cport.html
Since the 1/4" inputs are unbalanced how much quality loss would I have if I used unbalanced mics?

Thanks!

Balanced cables are good for keeping noise from creeping in over long distances. They reject interference from other sources better than unbalanced cables.

XLR to 1/4 are essentially just an unbalanced cable that has two different connectors on each end.
