Simple but annoying automation question, arggggh!

This question is a very simple one, but I cant seem to find the dang answer!

How do you "reset" the automation, when you're automating by using the sliders. ALL I'm trying to do is fade out a song. I faded it too early and I simply want to do it again. But now, when I enable the write automation button it doesnt seem to "erase" what I did before. I thought if you just went over the same spot in the tune and this time did something different with the slider ( I'm using the master stereo out to fade the whole thing) the previous things you did with the slider at that point would be cleared. But apparently not - the damn thing just COMBINES them or something. when I put read automation on it still does that original too early fade, and then GOES BACK UP just before where I faded it the second time, and fades out AGAIN. Seriously, what kind of sense does that make? So the obvious question is how do you just clear any and all previous automation?
Any and all replies appreciated.

Why don't you just render the file without the fade and fade it in mastering?
You can also draw the fade insted of using the fader. It's much easier.

That's what I would recommend. Much easier that way. Depending on which version of Cubase you have, I think that you can just manually go in and erase the automation track, but I'm not sure. I just got SX, and am still getting used to how it works compared to my old, old, Cubasis stuff.

thanks for the replies,

I would draw an automation curve instead of doing it with the fader, but i thought you could only do that on the tracks, I dont see where to do it on the stereo output as a whole. I obviously dont want to go in there and draw curves for all the tracks that would be crazy. Besides, its just the principle of the thing - this is one of the most basic functions in Cubase and I cant figure out how to do it. I like fading with the slider. I'd like to just be able to fade out a quick mix and see what it sounds like. I guess by rendering it you mean mixing it all down to one track (while still staying 32 bit float for the resolution) and I guess I could do that, then draw a fade out under that, but I still would like to do it the other way. It'd be nice to not have to do that whole extra step just to get a fade on something. but thanks again, if anybody else knows how to do that let me know.

Right click over one of the tracks (not over the waveform), check "Show Used Automation For All Tracks". You will now see an automation track under each audio track. Using your pointer, drag a box around the automation envelope that you want to delete. Click Edit, Delete.

Alternately, you can right click the toolbar, check Automation so that the automation mode option box is visible on the toolbar. Switch the mode to Overwrite (Touch Fader is the default). In Overwrite mode, you can do what you were originally trying to do, record over the current automation envelope.

In Help, checkout Automation, Modes, to see what the different modes do.

Hope that helps. :D

How are you mixing if you aren't rendering the file? How are you getting it to disc without mastering it somehow? You have to bring it down to 16 bit and make it louder at some point, that would be when you do the fade.

That is a good question... Can you even dither in Cubase?

umm,.........yes. via, a plugin (UV22HR) on the output buss thru the 7 or 8 slot insert.

Hey man, just put all your tracks in a "Group Channel"...use your group channel fader to control all tracks.Uncheck all other " W & R" it wont matter if the previous data still show, the group channel will only matter now.

If you want to delete the entire control track (i.e. Volume), you can select it and press the delete button to delete it or use 'Remove Track'.
When you do this, the control track will disappear. When you press the '+' button to expand the control track again, there will be a new, empty Volume control track there ready for writing.

All you gotta do is edit the automation line. Right-click in the blue area around the W or R buttons and select "Show Used Automation". Now you see a blue line with black dots. Probably to fades showing at the end. You can click and delete points, and then draw new ones.
