"Signal Processor" is a fairly vague term that could mean any piece of gear that alters the audio signal in any way. The racks of gear you see in pro studios generally consist of things like microphone preamps, compressors, reverb units, equalizers, power conditioners (for regulating the power needs of all this gear), and various other asundry goodies. I would recommend that most home studios have a few different mic preamps, a compressor or two, and perhaps a good reverb unit. If you're recording to computer, most other stuff can be accomplished by software and you may not need all that gear. The flashing lights look cool, though.
