Sidechain Hookup

Can anyone discuss the basic sidechain hookup for "ducking?"

I run mixer output to a Behringer MDS1400 (which works very nicely, thank you) to 2-track master. I know there is a Y-type connector line but does the mic go to the mixer channel or (through the Y-line) direct to the compressor for the duck function?

All comments welcome.

Basically the signal that you want to duck goes through the compressor normally while the signal that you want to trigger the ducking goes to the sidechain input.

For an exact explanation of the hookup we need to know exactly what you are trying to achieve.

I'm doing basic voice-over with sound bed or other music background: commercials, narrations, etc.

I take it the mic doesn't go through the mixer per se, as would the backgroung material. Since my compressor is downstream of the mains (assuming also this is the place for it), am I on the right track by sending the mic (through its preamp) direct to the compressor sidechain input instead of the mixer?

If so, how about aux hookup (I use a Nanoverb.)? Sending the preamped mic through the NV upstream of the SC input sounds logical.

Thanks again.

Run the mic through the mixer as usual. Use one of the aux sends to feed the sidechain on the compressor. Use another aux send for the reverb.
