sidechain compression set up on mackie 16401

Hello guys

first post here,, dumb question

I have a mackie onyx 1640i and a fmr rnc compressor

I would like to know how to set the compressor to the mackie in order to have sidechain compression some of my channels?

I already know the basics of compression,,, I just need help to set it up on an analog mixer?

Unless the mixer has buses, you will have to use the aux send to get to the compressor and then return into a channel (or any other input)

If it does have sub group, buses, etc... (what ever mackie calls them), just route the channel to both the sub group and the master output. Then insert the compressor on that sub group, using the insert.

Sometimes mackie doesn't have inserts on their subs (wtf?), so you might have to do thE aux thing anyway.
 
Looking at the rear panel, the sub groups do not have inserts. You can send to a sub group, come out of the sub out and back into a channel. Insert the compressor on that channel...

Basically, you need to come out any output (except the main out) and then bring it back in to any input that allows you to route it to the main out. Really, no matter what they are labeled, all inputs and outputs are the same. (of course some are line level, some are mic)
 
If you're going to process channels channels individually then you just use an insert cable like usual, but send signal from an aux or bus out to the sidechain input of the compressor.

If you're going to process channels as a group then use an aux or bus to create the group, send that through the compressor and back to a channel, then connect another aux or bus to the sidechain.
 
Sorry!!!! I just re-read the original post, I was giving instructions for parallel compression, not sidechain. Sidechain would be using the aux.
