is it really worth it to have an sm7 that now he has to get another preamp?
What pre do you have now?

my orginal reason for buying the sm7 was all the great reviews it got for rock vocals.

my " main " mic before that was the studio projects b1 , which does fit the singer fairly well

then i went out and bought a Audio Tech. 3035, which i didnt like one bit, so i returned it.

the sm7 sounds great on this singers voice, im just wishing i had a touch more gain on my 002 to make life easier.

The SM7 is really good for a dry, flat vocal sound. I use it for bass guitar and heavy, distorted guitar. It works out well. Sometimes I'll use it as a vocal mic, but usually only has a "dry effect".
