I bought an original Sm7 this week. I didn't read the auction very carefully and I realize now that they only had the larger of the two Sm7 windscreens. I found where I can buy the smaller one but my question is....Is there any reason that I can't use it without the windscreen on the mic? I bought it to cover some guitar micing and some very light vocal duties. I am assuming on vocals, a pop filter should have my bases covered but maybe I am missing something here? Any thoughts opinions are appreciated. The replacement screen is $18 shipped so not really that big of a deal. If I can save the money though, I am all in favor.

Yeah, with a pop filter, you should be fine. I can't think of any reason I'd use a foam windscreen when recording indoors at all.

Well I know it is bad form but I am only going off what I have "seen". I've never seen any photos of the sm7 in use without any of the "windscreens" on it.

It'll be fine without the windscreen...I use it like that all the time, especially for mic'ing acoustic guitar. Just use a pop filter when you record vocals, that's all.

I like the sound of my SM7b mics without the windscreen. It can be difficult to remove at first, so you've got a head start :D

The only time I've really wanted it was for recording spoken interviews where the people are talking casually and not using any meaningful mic technique (what the mic was made for, really)

Ok cool guys...thanks for the input. Looks like I can stick $18 elsewhere...
