Shure: SM58 or KSM27?

The SM58 is a dynamic mic and the KSM-27 is a large diaphram condenser mic, two very different mikes. What do you want to record ?

Vocals only! And I want the best quality for the vocals ( I rap and I beatbox too so the sound must be of very high quality!!!)

58

For what your doing I don't think you really need a large diaphram condener mic. I'd get the 58, it's cheaper, more versitile (stage and studio), widely excepted, and more durable. If you were singing etc then yeah the KSM but for raping and beat box the 58 would be just fine. That's my opinion.

Jason, I won't be the only person to use this microphone. My chorists will use it too... And beatbox moves a lot of air ( Do you know what is beatboxing???) I must have the best... this will the biggest part of my equipment so I plan on investing a lot in it. (I can invest 500$ canadian which is about $320 US dollars. I will buy my mic from an ebay auction...

Thanks,
Beathoven

The KSM27 is probably too new to get a great price on, even at ebay. For the $300 you can probably find a used KSM 32 though.

can i recommend an NT2? It's a little more than the others, but i've used it a few times and never been disapointed.

Also, don't forget a pop sheild! :)

Hm hmmmmm....

Hey, the C1 seems a pretty interesting choice too and costs a bit more than a used shure KSM27 or KSM32

Could be my future mic too...

Peace,

For a few $$ more you should also give serious consideration
to the Shure KSM32! I bought a used 1 'bout a year and a half ago. Mind you I'm no singer in any way, shape or form, but the 32 provides a clean & warm sound w/o emphasizing any 1 particular frequency range. Most excellent for capturing STRAIGHT
vocals backed by a small ensemble of acoustic musicians or 3 piece band! Good response also on Strings and pianos.

I think he means using his mouth to make beatbox sounds, I think that would destroy anything other than a SM-58.

Large condensors are ment for singing from a distance threw a pop fliter.

An EV RE-20 might be the only studio mic suitable for this "beatboxing".

ditto on the dynamic, how about a Sennheiser?

yeah, I agree. If he's up on the mic doing the beatbox simulation thing, he's gonna want a dynamic. RE-20s are relatively dark, though. You might check out a Sennheiser MD-441. It's the long silver rectangular mic. I used to own one and traded it for my precious RCA ribbon. I love my RCA, but sometimes I miss the Sennheiser. They are dynamic mics, but have extended and flat frequency response much like a condenser. It's the live mic of choice for many pros, Elton, Prince, Stevie Nix. It has a 5 position (!!!) bass rolloff switch, and a presence boost switch. I used it once on a gig as a vocal mic and it was without a doubt the best live vocal sound I've ever gotten. But it's primarily a studio mic, though very rugged. Supposedly you can fire a gun a couple feet away with no problem (long as you don't hit the mic!) You don't see them advertized much anymore. In fact, it's possible Sennheiser quit making them.

Ksm-27....very good...no real close proximities though screen or no....MD-441 very good.....shure sm-7....awesome and all the radio stations have had one or still do...a good condenser with a roll off and attenuation....Md-421....millions of 'em....sm-58 what could go wrong and if you happen to need a hammer.....

More importantly a wind screen AND a gooseneck popper-stopper
with a comp that's heavy on de-essing is a requirement for
hard, rhythmic vocals or doin' the "Dougie Fresh"!!!

If you are Beatboxing dont get the condenser, you will ruin it from spitting.

Actually a sm57 is your best bet there.

I will buy a C1

I will finally buy a C1... The reviews seem sold to this mic.

(P.S.: Where should I look to find something to hang the microphone from the ceiling? Also, does the C1 fits in any shockmount? If yes, which ones?)
