Well I am sure that it has been done before and I just had the opportunity so I went for it.

Did a whole weekend festival with nothing but twelve SM57's and four Radial JDI passive Di boxes.

Wasn't that bad at all! May now have to sell all of my other microphones.

Coolio! :D When I get the time, I want to do an entire song with a 57 just to see how it sounds!

But I want to know if that setup would have worked with twelve SM58's instead ???

Could just be urban legend but I believe that there was a Tom Petty album (or was it a tour) that this was accomplished?

Oh am sure but the look would have been different.

The question in all of the acts eyes were something else - but after their sets they all said that it sounded really good.

i saw a guy going on about recording drums and he used nothing but SM57's and an sE Z3300a as the room mic. it freaked me out but i've seen plenty of live shows where the drum overheads are 57's and none of them have sounded bad.

i do just love the thought of all the acts looking at the setup and going "um..... wait, wtf!" :D

I just want to ask, I am thinking of buying a microphone, can anyone tell me the difference between a SM57 and a SM58? OH Wait!!!! that's another thread!!!!!

Arghhhhhhhh!!!!. :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Sorry could not help myself.

Alan.

It was quite funny at times. I was really flying by the seat of my pants on this festival for I had no other microphones but the 57's in my microphone package that I had with me.
I had read all of the stage plots and input lists of all the acts and felt confident that the 57's would work Admirably in all positions. And that they did!

One of the members of one act asked - what are we singing into for a microphone? (I had the wind screen on the majority of all the 57's that make the recognizable 57 silhouette, not so recognizable.) I said *a 57* then he went around to other things like the guitar amp, horn players and drums ... same answer. 57's ;)

There was one guy who asked if I had a Beta58a to sing into. I told him very politely that I had not and that this was only a test. :p It didn't phase him much - especially once he head the mix.

:laughings: Let that be a lesson to all of those type of questions.

Just donate the other 300+ to a familiar struggling English studio.
My address is in my profile lol

Screw you, newcomer!
Join the queue. :D

Nice Steeno lol

Don't worry. There are plenty of microphones to go around.

Guess I could start to writing my gear will. And post it here. The question is which forum?
It has to be a thread devoted strictly for the transfer of audio gear to fellow members here once one has resumed room temperature.
It could be a thread for anyone wanting to pass recording/live along ... but not like the pay it forward thread. Yet that is a good thread.
Keep in mind that my chauffeur will probably get my AKG C-12 ;)

Since most of these guys are dynamic fanatics (dynnatics?) I'd be happy to take any condensers you happen to have just to save you the hassle of throwing them away....
