Shure SM57 vs. Audix I5

i need a mic for random percussion instruments (ie. claves, shaker) and also vocals. in the future, i may want to use it for mic'ing drums, but not primarily right now.

which of the 2 would be best?

That is purely subjective. I prefer the i5 personally, but the SM57 has been the go-to mic of many engineers for a long time, and has its advocates.

IMHO, the two mics are very similar but the Audix just has a little more balls, wheras the '57 can be pretty harsh & trebly at times...

The differences only appeal to personal opinions, and neither is better suited to what you want then the other.
