Thanks Seidy. Tx for the link. Not gonna mess around with puncturing of any nameplates, screwdrivers, o-rings, rubber bands or otherwise. Just gonna take mine back and swap it out for an SM58.

Trade it for a 58, its the same Mic with a different head. a 58 is intended for vocals, a 57 is the instrument Mic

Thanks Farview. I chatted to some jazz musos and they reckon they even use 58's for mic-ing up amps. If i don't come right with the 57, i'll do the swap.

Now that I'm at the studio, I just checked a bunch of my 57s. You can turn the grill, but it doesn't just flop around on the top of the mic. They may have just not crimped that one on very well, or that one could be one of those chinese rip-offs.

A 58 is literally the same mike with a ball head. The only difference in sound is caused by the ball head preventing you from getting the capsule as close to the source as you can get a 57. This can be remedied by unscrewing the ball off of the 58 to essentially make a 57 with no grill.

Hey guys, I'm gonna move this thread to the mic forum :)

Thanks!

Hi Farview. That's a very good point. Reading the SM 57 manual, it is built to get the mic as close as possible to the amp source. I didn't think about that. Good reason to now replace with a new 57 that doesn't have such a wobbly cap. Thanks. This helps a lot with my decision.

Probably as you say, not crimped well enough. Nope, it's the real thing. No Chinese rip off.

Hi Telegram Sam. Not yet. Will report back as soon as it is sorted.

Hi all,

I took the Sm57 back and got a replacement. The head cap was indeed too loose. The cap on the new one still spins but it's less loose. If you spin/twist/move the cap to a point where it's at its tightest, this seems to be the optimal positioning for noise reduction. Tilting the new one, does not cause any noise. Shaking it quite vigorously makes a noise but I doubt even a shaking dance floor would cause the new one to slip out of it's 'tight spot' and start amplifying any unwanted mechanical movement between the cap and body.

The old one must have been part of a 'bad' batch. My friend bought an SM57 from the same music shop franchise, same town, different location/suburb. His too, was too loose. He also took his back and got a replacement. So that's 2 they need to frame for posterity! They didn't seem too keen on the idea. They just said that they'd send it back to the suppliers.

When I took mine back, there was a drummer there who uses an SM57 to mic up his snare drum. He said he has taped the cap down on his SM57 because it was making too much noise. Based on info from this forum, I mentioned to him that this changes the frequency response from cardiod to omni. It seems strange that Shure would design/produce a multi-functional microphone that needed to be 'taped down' before you could use it to mic up a snare drum.

Anyways. Thanks guys for all the assists. I'm sure with my new SM 57, i can now get a noise free mic'd up guitar amp going. Thread/issue closed.
