In theory there is a sound difference, but I'm not sure you'd be able to hear it (depending on how bad the dent is). With that said, you can get new Shure SM58 windscreens for about $9 each.

ok thanks... wat purpose does the windscreen have? is it a windscreen? lol.. prob... but why doesnt the sm 57 have one? or is the thing spinning thing on top a windscreen? and where could i get the new tops for em? and prob some clips too.... i dont wanna get em off ebay. maybe a local store?

o ya... like... can i mic be damaged.... but only slightly? like... if i a mic doesnt have a obvious hiss or other very obviuos prob.. like it doesnt work....are their any other things to listen for when testing out a used mic?wat else is common? i compared the 58 ( used mic) with the 57 i own.. and they matched up good. but .. can a used mic have probs other than hiss/ not workin at all? cause i know the kid threw them around.. thats why the dents are there.

The windscreen/grill helps protect the diaphragm and helps reduce noise, pops, and etc. The spinning thing on as you call it on the SM57 is also a windscreen/grill. You should be able to get new SM58 windscreens/grills from your local music stores.

anything else to watch out when checkin out used mics? like... hiss... if the mic even works... but how else can a mic be damaged that isnt as obviuos?

slightly off-topic but this is the exact reason i chose to go with sennheiser mics for my live setup. the tops don't dent like the shures (although the paint does scratch slightly easier).

apart from anything i don't like singing into a mic with a wrecked ball.

but the sm58s you're getting have to be cheap because once you've bought new tops it may not be such a good deal any more.....

Maybe the tops don't bent that fast but i 'm sure you can trow your sm58 about a hundred times on the floor, replace the top and you still get a "brand new mike" don't try that with the sennheisers :) I think thats acctually the biggest reason why people use the sm58 above the e8x5. That's what i think offcourse:)

for how much can you get those sm58's ?
i also heard that diapfraghm could be streched a little, so that the output is weaker maybe? anybody correct me on this if i'm wrong.
grrreetz

maybe. i feel like the senns will last a decent while although i'm sure you're right that they won't take abuse the shures have proved they can. i'd say i can drop my senn's but i can't throw them. with shures you can do both for sure ;)

price

i got them off a friend of friend... he bought two 58s and stole a bg 5.1 from some show he went to along time ago....i dont support doing that.. but hey... a good price... i got

2 sm 58s and a Shure BG 5.1 for $120

i like the sound of the Bg 5.1 .. its a handheld condenser.

fair enough. buy the tops and enjoy them. just be careful who else you tell it's stolen!

But you are supporting it, and your happy about it too.

1. Your friends with a thief.

2. You knew the mic was stolen, yet you bought it anyway... that makes you a thief too.

3. I hate frickin' thieves and I wish I never helped you.

you're a guy with principles DJL, i think that's good.

on this occasion i don't actually think you're barking up the wrong tree either.

i guess i know why i go to shows and the stuff is in glass cabinets now.

i understand how u guys are pissed at me for buying the mics... but look at my situation... first of all.. it wasnt my friend... i dont even know the kid... it was my friends friends.... second of all... he would sell me the mics individually.. he wanted 120 for all... no exceptions... also.. i dont know who he stole em from... or i would rat his ass out... and if i wasnt going to buy the mics... he would have just gone to the next kid he knew and sold em to him .... so come on dude...???

I gotta agree with DJL on this one, too...(take a deep breath, everyone)

I had about $3000 in live sound stuff stolen out of a truck about 2 years ago. Amazingly enough, about 4 months later, a bunch of identical gear started showing up, piece by piece, at the local Music-Go-Round and in the newspaper.

We busted the little fuck that ripped me off. Felony theft. He won't be working for the government in THIS lifetime.

I hope somone does the same to your "friend's friend", because he's a thief. And if the original owner of the 5.1 finds out you've got it, you can get busted for possession of stolen property (especially since you KNOW it's hot), as well as losing the mic. Is it worth it?

dude... he stole it almost 2 years ago... if i could find the owner.. i would gladly give it back ! im not tryin to be an asshole.

yeah but if you knew it was hot and you still bought it you've put yourself in a bad situation.

if someone else wanted to buy stolen merch they could've ... just because they would've doesn't justify you doing it!!

i see wat ur sayin... i agree with wat u guys have been sayin... made me think alot.. i wont ever buy stolen shit agian i dont think... but dont be pissed at me and not reply to my posts or sometihn.... if i ever find the owner.. it will go to his hands for free.
