My friend brought over his Shure SM 58 yesterday and we used it to track some vocals...man, what a sound! We did some rod stewart and it really captured the kinda soft'husky vocals. Anybody else use these?

No, it's a pretty rare mic, so not too many people have used it. I have seen them before, but I don't have one myself.

i cant tell if you're being sarcastic or not...oh god!!

I hear the president uses one for all his speeches!

ps. mshilarious, your MSH1Os are fantastic. I'm getting some really sweet ambient recordings from them!

Why is everyone recording ambiences? They run by my place every 15 minutes or so.

shure...many times. I had to sell them though to buy other mics. they all have really crappy mixing skills or at least all the microphones I've owned.

I've traded shit loads of gear all of it failing to make a great sounding recording.

wish someone would make some good gear.

Everyone loves to bash this mic. If it works for you, pay no attention to the naysayers. I like the SM57 a little better than an SM58. The SM57 with a pop screen through an RNP sounds better on my particular voice than anything else I have tried, up to some ~ $500ish sounding condensers and an SM7b. I can't justify spending more than $500 on a mic for what is basically a glorified hobby/obsession and not really a potential $ generating studio. So as far as I'm concerned, the SM57 is all I need for my vocal. The SM58 I have was okay, just a little thinner than my SM57. Then again, it has rolled off of my bass amp at gigs countless times in the past 16 years, so it is probably not as good sounding as yours.

We tried a few....Sennheisers, TB 1 by studio projects and another studio projects condenser...CS 3 I think. In terms of recording through a dynamic, im real pleased with the result. Cant wait to gig with it.

ok ok ok..

the 58 might be the most popular mic in the world, along with the 57.

i've never used one for recording suprisingly. ive only used them live. i use 57's for everything on recordings, except vocals.

i'm sure it worked just fine, its a well made mic. and if you ever are on the way to a gig and something breaks where you need a hammer, you can use it for that too.

I use an SM58 for vocals, but I'm using an MXL 990 at the same time.
