ranjam, the PG57 does have a different element than the SM. i talked to Shure because i read that the PGs were just a cheaper made version of the SMs, but not so. the PGs are TOTALLY different mics.

not cheap made and totally different sound. for me i prefer the pg57 over the sm57 anyday. and the sm57 is a good mic, but for me, the sound i'm wanting comes from the pg57.

i've read that the PG 57s sound like they are under a blanket, i dont get this, maybe the style of music they are doing, i dont know, but for country music, clean playing. the PG57 is perfectly clear needing VERY little to no eq'ing to get the sound from your instrument.

since i've got mine, i've had 3 other people buy them, one for his guitar amp, the other two tried it out as vocal mics and bought them for vocal mics. i have to say, i bought mine for guitar amp, but the are not bad for vocals either depending on the singer.

i'm sure there are other great mics out there. but i will stand behind the PG57 100%. not sure about any of the other PG series, hadnt tried them.

99 views out of 100 on this thread would be from people who use SM57's on almost everything, get awesome results, and probably think this is a moot point and won't respond. I ALMOST didn't :)

The SM57 is world class to this day. It's no secret that it's used on most prefessional recordings for decades. I wouldn't pay attention to anyone who doesn't like it via their personal taste, and then try an blame it on Mexico as if it's some kind of fact. SM57's were designed decades ago in Illinios. Manufacturing them in Mexico will NOT change how they sound.

Main reason I posted finally :) Although I personally don't like Sennheiser, I have to say The MD421 would be the only other mic I'd use for guitar cabs. No one mentioned it yet, however it does cost almost 4 times more than the SM57. Non the less a good investment if you're serious about good recorded guitar tone.....

Wrong. Try this: 99 views out of 100 are from folks who use SM57's on something, and probably regularly. (That's quite different from using it on "almost everything.")

Yep, the SM57 is a staple--and for good reason. I certainly use all of mine fairly regularly. But it's not on my kick, or my toms, or my OHs. It's not on my vocals, my bass, or my acoustic.

And it's not even always on my cabs. It shares regularly duty there with an i5, an e609, an SM7b, a 421, and a number of different ribbons.

I'd even go so far as to say that an SM57 should be the first mic an electric guitarist should buy. And that's an endorsement in and of itself. But just as someone who's "serious about good recorded guitar tone" needs an SM57, (even the word "needs" is debatable there) I'd say that someone who's serious about recording other things is not going to be able to use that SM57 on almost everything.

ROFL! Boy, Shure is so lucky they got an endorsement from the forum king Mr. whitestrat. Their profits will certainly go through the roof now.

I did'nt say to buy 1 SM57 and that's it forever. The OP is asking if the step up to a SM from a PG is worth it. And according to people like Terry Date and many others at his level, IT IS!!!!! You can take my reply out of context if you want but it's hilarious that you end up agreeing with me proving you just want to argue. Wait are you this forum's troll? Also I simply offered another idea that most can agree on. The MD421.

Geez dude, I promise to start working on my people skills if you swear you'll start reading the OP's more carefully and try to answer a question instead of being a big, know it all, forum bully............:o Oh man!! I'm trying to hold it in. I can't, I can't, quick, click on something else before I call you a name :D.......

I think this officially puts your people skills in question.

the 57 is good for guitar cabs, but I prefer the e609. Less muddy, fits into the mix better. Only $10 more.

If you think I'm a forum bully or troll--check a bit of my history and read some of my posts. I just happened to logon and check out some mic threads, and in two threads I see you for the first two times ever. In one, you're calling people idiots. In another, you're calling 'em jerks. Real nice way to make your entrance...

And you think I'm the troll?

Hmm....

Seriously: You're welcome to chill out and try again. No one's stopping you. I'm certainly no mod. (Though I understand you think of me as some sort of King :)). But you really shouldn't act surprised and wounded when I call you out for a) calling someone a jerk because you don't like his answer; and b) calling others idiots for a mic purchase. I'd say you invited a bit of scrutiny.

Oh, don't worry, there are plenty jerks and idiots here--but you really should be here long enough to figure out who they are before you start tossing the labels around.

Again, good luck!

Be it resolved that everyone who records should at some point own a SM57.

It's a handy mic, and the cheapest (no comparison) classic studio mic. It seldom sounds stellar, although it can, but never sounds horrible either.

I love the sound on shakers, congas and for certain vocal sounds. It sounds like John Fogerty in CCR, like the vocals in "Fortunate Son". A friend of mine's Dad had a pro studio and in the 70's Carlos Santana recorded there and they said he used a SM57 on a Twin, and they had $10K Neumanns he could have used so that says something.
