hi there
ive been researching since the beginning of the year on the home recording studio, one area ive not learned so much about is microphones.
i talked to a shop asisstant in my local music store, n he suggested the shure pgd-mk4 drum mic kit being a good kit to start with. i was wondering what other people thought of the mics included in this kit? (3 pg56's, 1 pg52). thanks alot in advance
Steve

can only go by what I've heard/read, the PG52 is fairly weak, lacking the "beefiness" of the Beta 52 but the pg56 is a serviceable tom mic.

I have a couple of the PG kits in my live rigs. The PG56's surprised me in their usability on toms, but the PG52 didn't sound so good to me. It does seem to work decently on floor toms and even OK on bass cabs.

i see. well, being the only drum mic kit in the store, it may have just being his salesmanship to try n get me to buy it? ok, so if this is not such a good kit, what kits/microphones would you suggest being suitable for the home recording studio? thanks guys,

Steve

akg D112 on the kick (or shure beta 52)
sennheiser e604 on toms
shure sm 57 on snare

I agree w/ Farview...the only other thing i might do is put an overhead mic...if you don't have a condenser to use, try a dynamic mic...if it doesn't sound good, you can easily remove it from the mix...
