Quick question,

How well does the Shure 6 piece mic pack work for recording?

It has 1 PG52 kick drum, 3 PG56's, and 2 PG81's ( I would add a SM57 for the snare drum).

Thanks for any help.

Don't do it! Everything I've read or heard about the PG series mics indicates that they are crap. Many folks around here (myself included) are not too fond of drum mic kits in general, as you can do a lot better assembling your own set of mics. That being said, I've read some positive things about the Red 5 Audio drum mic kits ( http://www.red5audio.com/acatalog/Drum_Kit_Mics.html ), so you may want to look into those.

In general, a dynamic mic that has an on/off switch should be avoided.

( I know this should go in the mic section but since it's already here)
what do you suggest I use then for a 3 tom, 1 snare , 1 kick drum set?
I already have a sm57 and plan on getting 2 more.

Thanks

I'm using 57's on my toms and a Beyer M201 on snare. For kick I use a Beyer TGX-50, but they haven't made those in a few years. Many people are hot on the D112 for kick.

People have said good things about the Senheiser e604 on toms.

Not to mention the e602 on kick. Oops, I just mentioned it. I also use it. :)

from what ive heard, the beta 52 kicks ass as well as the d112.

Thanks everyone

I have also heard it isn't necessary to mic any of the toms and instead just use the over heads to do that task, anyone know how well that works?

it can work ok. ive done it a few times, but obviously your gunna pick up a load of cymbals so if you want to apply any kinda of effect or process to the tracks in any way your gunna have to be careful cos youl be changing ur cymbal sounds. Also they wouldnt sound as close in the mix and u wont have as much control over them...

I think that if I would get a drum package it would have to be the other Shure drum pak. They have another drum package that comes with 3 X SM57 and a Beta 52. It also comes with a case and some drum mounts. A sm57 can always come in handy. I wish I had three but I only have one. All you have to do is get some SD condensers and you're ready to rock. Although it would be twice as expensive as the PG package it would be well worth it.

Audix makes a couple real nice drum mics. IMO the D6 kicks everythings ass, used the beta and it didn't give me the same sound as the D6. Audix has a drum mic kit that has three f10's and an f12 for a couple hundred, I used that until I got my d2's. Savin for the md421's now.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I've come to a pretty definate plan of getting either a Beta 52 or D 112 for the kick, and then for overheads purchasing the AKG C 430 pair. I'm going to end up having 3 sm57's soon and plan to use those on the snare and toms.

Does that sound reasonable?

Soudns reasonable- id say you really NEED overheads even if you dont blend alot if it into the final mix. To me, the overheads pick up some of the room and make the kit sounds "real". My latest drum micing scheme is a pair of oktava mk012's on overheads, a d112 for the kick and an mxlv67g under the snare to get the snap of the snare and the click of the kick. THe v67g under the snare is probably a rather "unorthodox" choice, but its what i had sitting around (i've got limited mics like everyone else) and its actually worked out pretty well. :)

I think that would be good. Although it would be a good idea to rent different types of overheads if you are able to in order to find the one you like in your price range. I find overheads can be quite a presonal thing. SM 57s will always come in handy and so will the Beta 52 or the d112 but there are tonnes of different types of mics that one could use for overheads. I've never tried the C430s. By reading up on them at the AKG website. I get the feeling that they seem like a brighter mic. They look like some good mics but everyone likes different flavours and the only way to know which one you like is to try them out for yourself.
