Anyone have any suggestions on the Shure KSM27 or the AT 4040 for solo acoustic guitar. A buddy is selling a KSM 27 used for a good price, so i was thinking about picking it up. I am looking for something to record solo fingerstyle steel string guitar. The reviews of the 27 looked good. My thought was getting the AT 4040. I dont have a LDC, was going to get the 4040 because it seemed like a good all around LDC to start with. For that mic i would have to buy one at normal price.

Reviews on both mics look good. The 27 seems to have a bump in the bass and highs. The bass thing could be a problem with my acoustic, as its a mini jumbo kinda boomy already if i get to close.

I like my AT 4040 a lot. I've used it for vocals and acoustic guitar, and at times as a room mic for drums. I find it to be even and flat, clear - what you hear is what you get through this mic. It's a great start to any LDC collection in my opinion. I haven't used the 27 so I can't help you there, but I know you won't go wrong if you pick up a 4040.

I've got a KSM27...good balanced sound if you point it between the 14th & 17th fret, angled toward the sound hole. 1-3ft away for a balanced open sound, 6-8" for finger picking, just make sure you switch on the roll-off pad to counter the proximity effect. Cheers!

I can't comment on the 4040 but I hooked up my KSM27 to my new Buzz Audio for the first time last night and the acoustic guitar sounded huge and extremely detailed! I was blown away. Apparently my Presonus Eureaka had been a bottleneck for that microphone, especially after I "upgraded" the opamps.

Got a KSM 27 on the way from a buddy. I figured it was a good price on the mic plus i can try it for a while before comitting.
