Great mic -- very useful, versatile. A bargain at any price.

Just wondering how you guys think the 44 compares to the KSM32. I have the 32 and it is somewhat uninspiring as a vocal mic. Works fine for choir and instruments though. Is the 44, in cardioid, a lot different sounding than the 32?

Thanks, Terry

Yes, and I prefer the 44... because it's warmer (for a lack of a better word) however, both mics are good.

The KSM series mics, in general, aren't really designed to be particularly flattering or colorful. They don't have a lot of built-in EQ, for lack of a better word. The nice thing about them is they are very smooth and accurate, with a strong midrange.

Very simple and elegent. If you're looking for something sexier with more bells & whistles, then you might want to look elsewhere -- just to warn you.

KSM44 is great for acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, many stringed instruments. I haven't found it nearly as useful on the vocals I've tried (always gone with something else).

Is the KSM 32 useful for anything, on vocals is very unflattering and on acoustic guitars its a bit too "stained" sounding...

Well for example, IMO the 32 is nice on some female vocals.

You should try it on a drum kit sometime. As an overhead or even kick drum. It's the balls on a guitar amplifier. Also great on female vocals, as DJL suggested.

I agree..however I've had better luck on vox with the 44 and Great River NV..They seem to go well together...You can really slam the pre with this mic...

Thanks guys.

That is what I've been hearing with my KSM32. Unflattering is a good discription. I bought it for two reasons. One is that I got it for $460 out the door and the other was because when I talked into it while listening through headphones, while comparing it to other sub $500 mics, it just sounded the most like me. I guess you'd call that acurate. It is very smooth, maybe too smooth for vocals. We use three for our Choir at church and they do a very good job at that. As a matter of fact, we recorded a live CD with them and it sounds very good. You can hear that here.

Blessings, Terry

It's my mic of choice for a traditional-sounding F5 mandolin sound...
Nice solid "woofy" chop on the mando--always hard to capture...

Good on banjo too...
