So, I've been thinking lately about buying some new earbuds for live usage as well as for my ipod. I've listened to a pair of E2s and I was fairly impressed with the sound, but I wanted to get some opinions on the entire Shure line before I made any decsions. Has anyone used the E3s or the E5s? Are they really worth the extra bucks? I like the idea of a dual driver system with a crossover which is what the E5s have, but are there other buds out there that have this for less? Any help would be appreciated.

The E5's are certainly much better for many applications than the E2's or E3's. If you are playng in a louder band, you may need the E5's to really cut through the stage volume. They will help you to maintain the volume you need in your ears without constantly pegging the limiter on the transmiter's and receivers. The E3's are actually a nice little step up from the E2's as well. A little more volume and what sounds to me like a better and more full frequency response. However, if the E2's sound good to you and will output enough for your situation, thn the E3 may not be necessary. The E5 in my opinion will always be a better earpiece but each individual needs to weigh the pros and cons between volume, sound quality and price for themselves. Get some custom ear molds made as well. It will also make a big difference.

The E5's are definately not a "high-fi" ear bud. they are great for stage monitoring, But I would not recomend them for listening to music.

they seem to have alot of presence, and the high frequencies are rolled off.

I have the E2s and think they're great. The E3s seemed a little more hi-fi to me ... more like an i-Pod earphone replacement. I've not used the E5s. I don't think you can go wrong either way ... the E2s have superb isolation and I've used them for quite a lot of different things.

I ended up going with the E2s. I borrowed a set of E5s from a friend and, to tell you the truth, I was not all that impressed. They were a bit louder than the E2s, but the sound wasn't all that different. Plus, they fit really strangely into my ears. They have a thicker cord next to the buds that is supposed to wrap around your ear more tightly. All it did was drive me nuts. The E5s are nice if you have $500 to blow on a set of earbuds, but if not, the E2s are awesome. Thanks for all the advice.

Glad you're happy - I use my E2s day in, day out. I chose them over E3s but E5s were out of my range. Make sure you try out all the different types and sizes of covers, I ended up using a smaller one than I thought I should because it made extended use more comfortable.
