same or better or worse than the regular 57?????????????

It's a brighter sounding mic. I got it becuse of the word "beta".

I'm going to get an sm57 and AB them and see what one I like better. The other one is going on the snare drum.

But yes I've been told differant.

apples to oranges.

Beta mics are basically the same, the only difference is they reject more sounds from behind the mic. So you know if you set up an SM57 and talk with the back of the mic facing your voice can still be recorded, well with betas, it'll still pick stuff up, but not nearly as much.

yup, the beta is hypercardiod, the 57 is cardiod. i find that the beta 58 (same as beta 57, apparently has more high end than the 58 or the 57. I hardly ever record with the beta 58 for that reason, but it is much better for live stuff.

ok i see so only the pattern is different thank you

I'd say theres a definite sound difference. I am not a fan of the regular 57 on much, but I really like the beta57 on guitar cabs. If I had to pick one, I'd personally go with the beta purely based on sound. I did an A/B test with them a while back and remember the beta having more presence and showed more detail.

There isa definately a difference between the beta and the sm series. First off, the beta typically has a tighter front pickup pattern, but does have a rear lobe. So, actually, the beta picks up a touch from the rear where the sm might not. There is also a big difference in sound. To me the sm57 has a more solid mid range punch, where the beta has a more extended, but smoother top end to it, a little better sounding to me as things like a voice start to enter the proximity area. There is also a pretty big difference between the older beta 57 and the newer beta 57a. The older beta 57 to me just does not sound as "exciting". It just seems to be kind of dull compared to the sound of the newer 57a. I also like the new grill style for the beta57a better. There are a lot of things that I still like an sm57 better for than a beta 57. However, that list got smaller when the beta 57a came out. Interestingly, I actually prefer standard sm58's over beta 58's though:)

hmm cool
