I was in a music store last weekend talking to the sales guy about mic's. He said the Shure 57 & 58 are the same mic with the same cartridge, they just have different wind screens. Is this correct

Absolutly. The 58 has the built in pop filter on it since it's meant for vocals. If you take off the "ball" on a 58 you essentialy have a 57.:D

if i were to use a sm57 for vocals, would i add a popfilter, one of those soft mic covers, or what?

Actually, according to Musician's Friend, the SM57 has a slightly wider frequency response (40Hz - 15kHz) than the SM58 (50Hz - 15kHz).

Here are the links:

SM57

and

SM58

What gives?

The ball could be responsible for the frequency response difference, and is certainly responsible for the 58's resistance to the proximity effect. I've always been told that innards are the same....you could try shure.com if you're really concerned.

if you want to make a 57 into a 58 for free do the following.

1. set up your 57 on a mic stand.
2. Get a wire cloths hanger and bend it into a noose.
3. get your mommy's or wife's pantyhose and slip it over the circle part of the contraption you just built.
4. duct tape the home made windscreen to your mic stand and bend it to the position that is desirable.
5. there you have it, home made windscreen

This is what I used to do before I decided to get a pop filter, it's great to use until you get one and it's better than nothing.

For God's sake, don't use your mommy's panty hose!!! You're going to be spending WAY too much time in front of that pop filter to have that kind of a head trip going on.

sound like somone it a bit too uncomfortable around women's products. In the studio you learn to do what you have to do.

Pop Filter

But don't use the crotch panel, really kills the highs

Using the crotch out of your Grandmothers panties will definatly kill a high.

Nowhere near where I thought this would lead, but I guess I got the answer to my question!!

Let me clarify things a bit here...

Yes both cartridges are identical (though different in the Beta models)

However, the different grilles DO change the frequency response. If you have ever A/B'd the mic's onstage, you will notice a clear 8k presence peak to the 58.

In addition, the shorter grill on the 57 allows tighter micing, resulting in:

1. Increased bass response (proximity effect)
2. Higher gain before feedback
3. Mo' output

Although, I prefer certain mics for certain applications, they are basically interchangable. No one will spank you if you use a 58 on the snare instead of a 57 ;-) Just use your ears and make sure it sounds good!

Stay away from the fishnet stockings

They will make your mics look cheap.

And their useless as a pop filter.

hahahahahahahhaha fishnet stockings?????? of course those won't work each of the holes are about a centimeter apart........ that would make a completly useless popfilter

sad thing is My wife will only wear them on a teusday. (the day the milkman comes). but we are never short on dairy products, so am I wrong to suspect anything?

Any way I had heard about the stocking hose thing for years as a poor mans pop filter.though it works it really brings down the wow factor a notch.

I mean...my grandmother's panty-hose really kill my thighs...
