Does anyone have an idea of where I can get a shrink wrap machine to do my own short runs. Any experience with any product. I did a web search and as well as a HRBBS search and did not find what I am hoping exists. Alternatives ideas are also welcome.
Reply filter....I am familiar with various services, I would like to do them at home.

Thanks Neb

get some of that window film you put on your windows. in the winter ...and run a hair dryer over it to shrink it!..

lol:D

doubt that would work but i thought of it a while ago ...now maybe someone will actually come on here and say they tried it!!!

Hey NEB!
What is it that you are trying to do with shrink wrap?

Scott

I'd guess that it would be cheaper to just go to a short-run operation with shrink-wrapping and have them do it.

shrink wrap? like on cd's, do u mean shrink tubing, to make snakes?

that website above looks pretty good. they sell "bags" that are the size of jewel case, so it'll be a good fit. the side where you seal the bag will look and feel like crap (a big ridge). for an example, go to blockbuster and check out their re-wrapped used tapes (similar machine).

frankly, i don't think it is worth it. as we all know, shrink wrap is a pain in the ass to remove on normal CDs. would you ever decide not to buy a CD just because it wasn't shrink wrapped?

but hey, it's your money.

Yeah....I dont think it is worth it either. These jewel cases scratch easily though, and with even a little handling they begin to look used. You know, people (buyers) like to think they are getting something for their money. Do you know, does Amazon or any of the other retailers demand shrink?

Oh and buy the way....whats the deal with Amazon and this new annual fee. $50- for Advantage . I got an E mail yesterday. What a bunch of BS.

Yep, I have tried the plastic stuff you put on your windows in the winter, and yep, it works like a charm! Looks nice, too. I buy this stuff anyway at the beginning of winter, and then I save all the larger pieces that are left after I cut the sheets to fit my window.

Actually, if you take a trip down to your local Blockbuster and check out their selection of pre-owned videos, you'll notice that a lot of them have been re-shrinkwrapped using this stuff.

This is by far the cheapest way to go, and while it is kinda tedious to do, it's worth it. Just don't hold the hair dryer on one spot for too long, or you'll mess up the jewel case and possibly the CD inside.

37 ...Unbelievable, I tried it too and it looked like chit. How did you seal your edges? Fold them over, melt and trim? I could not figure that out. I have done eveything else here at home, record, edit, burn, scan photo, print cover, etc. I would really like to know exactly how you got that film to work. If you dont mind. Thanks so much. Neb

From what I remember, last time I did it, I folded a sheet around a CD so that it overlapped in the middle of the back. I cut that first, leaving about 1 inch of overlap. Then I trimmed the top and bottom a bit, and then melted the middle seam. After that, I folder the top and bottom over, trimmed, and then melted those. Then I melted the whole thing. Basically, you want to get your seals right before you start melting the whole thing, and be sure to do the seal on the middle of the back of the CD first.

Takes some practice, I know, but it ends up looking pretty nice. Just try to get everything as tight and nice looking as possible before you even start using the hair dryer on the whole thing.

Good luck!

37point5... you put plastic up on your windows in the winter in Atlanta? I don't know dude... you should spend some time in Chicago.

Ya know, this is a really interesting point. I tend to agree with you: as far as I'm concerned, I'm interested in hearing what's on a disc - not what packaging it's sealed in. Yet, we're all (presumably) musicians or producers - not average consumers.

You're crazy if you think packaging makes little difference to the everyday customer. Though shrink wrap isn't all that FUNCTIONAL, it certainly makes an album look more PROFESSIONAL. If you're selling CD's on consignment, I'd say you should definitely think about shrink wrapping; it gives it that last little touch of polish.

Now, if you're handing them out to family members and friends exclusively, don't bother.

The bottom line is simple: if the logic surrounding shrink wrap held up (it doesn't add to the value of the CD, and doesn't make it more maketable), then neither does the idea of jewel case inserts, or rear panels. Try to think about marketing issues as someone who's NOT a musician...

Nah, Low Country, I live in Baltimore now. Much colder up here. Atlanta got cold for about a week. Here I have to deal with "blizzard of the century" type nonsense. Even with the plastic, the heating bill is still outrageous. I mean, I like the snow and all, but being stuck in your house for days on end because the snow is up to your waist begins to get old after a while.

On the other hand, Atlanta is a really crappy place to live, and Baltimore rocks, so its all worth it!
