Yeah, I got the idea from massive - even stole his electrical tape idea. It's an ADJ power strip. No conditioning. I did just add a balanced power supply though.....I wouldn't dare put it in my rack though, it weighs over 80lbs!
 
Best $30 you can spend - Assuming you have your power situation under control.
 
OK, this is the stuff that actually made it into my recording racks. I've also got some other extraneous stuff littered about in addition to my guitar rack.

I also have another 8u rack which is full of half built stuff, a nightpro eq3d clone and a cheap lex effects unit.

Whoever can spot the deliberate error in the pic wins a prize!

The prize being my respect and admiration for being so damn observant.

Kevin, did you DIY those pres? I´m a little tempted to enter in the DIY world... Can you share some impressions? Thanks!
 
DIY is very rewarding. I had zero experience of electronics before I started and to this day I could write what I know on a postage stamp. The projects I've taken on are established projects though which have plenty of documentation and you can get PCBs for them. In fact the blank unit you see in the rack is 4 channels of Baby animal mic pres by JLM audio and they come as a complete kit. That sort of things is a good starting point actually, or even a pedal if you play guitar.

It's really just a case of getting your soldering skills up together, and being very careful and patient with each build. You also find that you need to get to know the circuit intimately from a layout point of view and sourcing parts can be confusing at first.

By far the best resource for all things DIY is the group DIY forum at prodigy pro. They have some real geniuses there (people like John Hardy and Fred Forsell have been known to stop by) along with dullards like me and just about every level of knowledge/experience/expertise in between.

And of course the number one thing to bear in mind is that electricity can kill you! Not to be patronising but I don't want to go around telling people how great DIY electronics is without at least bringing that up. The G9 (silver 2u) is a full plate voltage valve mic pre with 250v HT at some points in the box.

That could really ruin your day.

sweet rack Kevin, is that G9 a valve pre? it seems like i've seen that somewhere before....

Hey Julian- if you're considering DIY, you should check out seventh circle audio. the beige rack in my pic is from them, and they sound fantastic.
they all come as kits so you don't have to worry about sourcing parts or any of that stuff.

thats my bass rig once i finish collage and get a job :D but with a crest power amp with it all going threough my current 410 :)

no rack yet though just a bass head!

Yeah, the Gyraf G9.

The front panel is the same design and layout as the one Gyraf uses but there's is a black panel with white detail.

I did black on silver for that early 80's hi-fi look! :D

I also used a nice chunky toggle switch for the power instead of the rotary and used a Fender amp jewel instead of an LED.
 
thats some pretty neat stuff Kevin, I followed the links...done elec eng. at college years ago and would love to go down this route. Anything you used off shelf you can compare that Gyra to?

Uh, no. :D

I can say it sounds better than all the cheap prosumer stuff I was using before but I've never used or had access to any high end pres (valve or otherwise). It's highly regarded, there are stories like "after I built my G9 I sold my Fearn" but I guess you have to take that stuff with a pinch of salt.

If you search prodigy-pro and geraslutz you might find a few reviews/opinions from pro engineers who've used comparable stuff?

Gyratec IX is the commercial, ready built version so you might want to look out for opinions on that too.
