should you EQ and or compress while mixing down .

Recording Is not that big of a problem although I could us some help there . But me and my wife use soundtracks so three tracks does fine being music already done . But the vol. levels are to low when sent to tape . I have put a dual 31 band eq in line and compessor to bring vol. up and it helped alot . but it still could be better so how do you use a eq and or compresseor in this or any operation .
 
First of all, EQ & Compressor things is verrrrryyy vary & subjective. You may find a lot of thread here (most in Mixing mastering forum) discussed about this. And... well, it's hard to tell, cause you didn't provide info about your gear. What multitrack ? what recorder ? What EQ / Comp ? What tape ? and how did you set em ? ;)
 
It all depends??? If you are using a PC you can do it one track at a time before mixdown. IF you are using a anolog set up it would be best to do it on mixdown or while recording. Even if you do get some of your eq and compression done on recording you will more than likely have to do at least some on mix down.

The point I guess would be that you don't want to add highs to your whole mix just because your vocals need highs. And you may need to compress the stereo track to gain more signal, but it is better to compress the tracks that contain signal spikes seperatly if possible and then add a little compression to the final mix as needed.

I meant to reply sooner but I beem cought up in a few things. I'm using a Akai dps12 12 track multitrack studio and haven't been using it long. You can record 6 tracks at one time and then 6 more or in what order you want to go. I have a cheap nady cl-5000 dual channel compressor limiter with gate and a peavy 231 dual 31 band eq p22 mic that are some what like the sm58,s for now and of course my pa equip. power amps 12 channel peavy mixer rq2314 minidisc and tape deck and a deltafex proccesser for my reverb plus what ever else I can get out of it.
And this tips do help and anything else you might have from what I've just told you....thanks

And I havn't been drinking but I believe somebody has been moving my keys around
