ok, ive been having bass freq problems for a long time now. it sucks i hate it. i put tones of bass traps all over my back wall...still didnt help, my krk rp8 monitors sound like they have NO low end. even when i play things in itunes on them. finally i went to the good ole guitar center and ABed the RP8s to some other monitors. and low and behold they sound EXACTLY like they do in my studio, hollow mids, and no low end. then i played the same song on some dynaudios and BOOM there it was, the bass the krks didnt have, way better imageing and whatnot. now i realize the dynaudios were 500 per speakers, and krks are 250 per speaker. but is that a good reason why my mixes come out bass heavy. cuz im overcompensating for the lack of bass in my monitors?

should i upgrade? how much should i upgrade? i think id be willing to spend 1000 or under for a pair. i dont know what to do. i just dont want to drop all the money on new monitors to find out it wont make THAT much of a difference i guess. anyone else hate the RP8s?

...Ian? is that you? sorry if it's not. i know someone with that screen name and he's got the same monitors..

The KRK V8s, the Mackie HR824, and the Yamaha HS80Ms are the only studio monitors with a relevant bass response (in that price range... Genelec makes some great ones but theyre like$3k or something) in my opinion... And even then I like to get the subwoofer just to be sure.

Why don't you buy a subwoofer?

ANDY HAHAHAHAHAH WHATS UP!!! i recorded ur band!!! thats HILARIOUS. . ... took my advice and started visiting this forum eh?

anyways.

what are ur opinions on dynaudios? arent those yahmahas supposed to be terrible monitors to mix on, if you only have those? dont they make mixes sound bad...in a good way? or is that another model im talking about

Dyna are suppose to be very good. I'd go A/B everything at guitar center and see if I liked them. How is your room acoustics?

imaging in my room is great, i could use a cloud of absorbtion above my mix position and some more stuff behind my monitors since they are kinda close to the back wall. i HAD SUPER bad bass problems, i couldnt hear anything. im not sure how much of a problem i have now cuz i moved my monitors slightly, and pulled my bass trapps off the wall 5 inches. the problem is my mix position is supposed to be in a bass null, 7 feet from the back wall. so thats where all my "trapping" attention has been directed to. now its to the point that my monitors, sound just like the ones at guitar center (before they sounded even worse)

I just got an SPL meter, and I have used it to find where bass is building up, and at what frequencies.

Run some test tones at various bass frequencies 50Hz to 150 Hz and see where you get some bumps in corners and crevaces. You can also use it to see if you are getting a bass null or drop off in your listening zone.

Try taking a look at the Event 8XLs. You should be able to find a pair for around $500. You may only be able to audition the Event TR8 models. Like me, but everything is exactly the same, but the 8XLs are meant to be played in louder monitoring situations. These are damn good, and darn accurate monitoring speakers for under $500.

I chose the TR8s, because I do not need the higher SPLs. Also, both models are front ported which helps put the bass in front. I am digging the bass I am getting, and I am in a room with some bass build up happening, but I am keeping me levels down around 80db at the listening position, so there are less bass build up problems at lower volumes.

How loud do you monitor at ? The louder you crank the more problems you get with reflections and bass buildup.

Bass in near field monitoring is not supposed to be thumping, but smooth and balanced with everything else in the mix. Maybe your expectations are too high.

Try running some bass test tones with your sine wave generator and as you move around the room, you will find the pockets (with your own ears), where you get phase cancellations. If you move into your listenting position and find a lot of phase cancellation, that is a pretty bad problem. You might need to re-do and rethink your monitor placement and listenting position, etc.

Using discrete sine wave tones should help you find your nulls and where phase cancellation is happening.
