Should I return the Nanocompressor for another?

I bought my first compressor. The Alesis Nanocompressor. It works if I set the controls to ungodly settings.

I have only had it for 15 days or so. I can still return it.

Should I? If so, what should I get?

RNC? An ART Tubepac? A dbx 266?

Help. (to be used for everything)

Keep it. If it only sounds like its working at ungodly settings that must mean the effect is subtle--not a bad thing, right? For around 99 bucks (I think thats what I paid for mine) no sense in getting rid of it. Although I am going to add a more expensive unit, I'll keep the nanocompressor just to have the extra channel of compression--it cheap enough to keep. I like the way it sounds running my bass through it.

I've never heard a good thing about the Nanocompresor. Never.
I'd go with the RNC. Rip Rowan (www.prorec.com) says it is the best compressor you can get for under $500.
He knows his shit and is straightforward and unbiased.

If you dont mind, I'll take the word of someone who records music and reviews gear for a living, and whose opinions seem to match mine, over some anonymous gimp who is recording with a $90 compressor.

S8-N:
Read my post above, and you'll be able to say that you have now heard good things about the nanocompressor! I don't know if I am "straightforward," "unbiased" or "that I know my shit," but I do listen carefully and make up my own mind about things. Try it!

i agree with chops - the nanocompressor is only a piece of shit if you try to make it do what it can't. if you want something to compress entire mixes - return it now! i got mine for around 80 bucks new and it's sounds great on basses. if you find any use at all for it i would keep it and buy a behringer composer also.

Whats up with the chip on your shoulder, S8-N? Must be all that in-breeding! At any rate, thanks for the pointer to prorec.com--I checked it out and it's a great site. Mellow out and spend some time being creative.
Regards,
Chops

Hey, I get no respect...I've told people many times here to ditch the nano and Alesis crap and buy the RNC (or the Behringer at least), and here's my good buddy S8-N sending people somewhere else... :( If you want, I can start talking all fancy with big words too!!!

Uh... sorry man. I was wondering when you were gonna bust me on all of the ProRec references. Its just a place I go, see.... Doesnt mean a thing to me. THIS site is first in my cold black heart.
Only AFTER I have read everything this site has to offer will I search ProRec for articles.
I never meant to hurt you...

No prob, S8-N...just gives me more impetus to do a bit more kick-ass writing, that's all!
