Not on the bad notes ;)

I can hear where you got self-conscious; that's a function of not being used to hearing yourself in cans. You hit a note, it sounds off, voice closes up and goes straight to head.

Practice makes perfect :)

very true, im not disagreeing at all with you with the cans thing. i need them to be able to stay with the song, but they make me perform worse...but yes, as i become more comfortable with this i believe it will improve. my main concern is just how my voice sounds different in the recordings, rather than my bad performances i've given in these clips. :o . but yes..even if i dont solve my main problem i deffinitely have some good tips to work with performing for a recording environment. i'll give everything a try first chance i can.

go analog.

I don't think it's fair to tell him he's not getting good results with digital because it's not analog. Heck, since he's just starting I bet he couldn't get good results with all of Abbey Road studio's gear.

Plus, I'm assuming that you are comparing TOP END analog gear to bottom of the barrel digital. That's like saying a Honda Civic is a bad car compared to a Porsche 911... you are talking about two totally different types of users and bank accounts with such a wide degree of seperation that it isn't a fair comparison.

Sorry to bring this one up so far down the road, but what output device are you using on the computer vs. the tape recorder? Headphones vs speakers?

I don't see anyway to get the same set of output from both. Particularly if you are hearing the same thing when you bring the tape recording into your computer.

I have an Archos Jukebox 20 gig MP3 recorder and Sound Pro's binaural mic and preamp. It sounds incredible when I record my mandolin and playback through head phones. Not very good when I play back through computer speakers. Head phone out on the computer speakers is incredible again.

What output device do you have on each? I'll suggest there is your difference.

Cheers,
Pete

Has anyone thought of this?

Is your soundcard's record line in/mic selected, not master/What U hear.
Your soundcard might be feeding back slightly or phasing or something.
Also I didn't listen to the clip, so I'm just guessing.

I agree that you should quit. When I first started out, I was getting pretty professional results. I probably would have quit, had my results not sounded so good. Cheers.
