should I get the Triton or wait for the Motif ES

I have the opportunity to get a used 61 key triton for $800. Its in great shape, no problems with it. I am in the process of putting together a home studio, with Cubase on my computer. I currently have a Yamaha P80. I was thinking about getting a Motif 7ES, but was wondering if I really needed it, since I wouldn't really need a sequencer. However, the Motif ES has some great sounds, but is very expensive. If I don't get the Motif, should I go with the S90, or should I get the Triton and later get a Motif rack? Someone told me that $800 is a great price for a Triton. I also like the Triton sounds since that is what I've have been taking lessons on.

I appreciate your advice.

Short answer.... It depends :)

What are you looking for? What features are important to you? For example how much sampling are you going to do, and is a lot of sample space important? Because the Motif ES will be expandable to 1GB of Sample RAM. Also, if you're going to deal with drum loops and such, the Slice'n'Dice feature of the Motif sampler is great, think of having ReCycle built into the workstation. It will also have a vastly expanded set of ROM waveforms/samples than that of the original Motif. It's also supposed to come with a killer FX section.

I really like the Triton sequencer, the user interface just makes sense to me and works great for loop based stuff, but you're saying that you'll be sequencing on the computer, so I am not sure if this is much of a concern. I also like the big touch screen, it's easy to view things, and does show a lot of helpful info.

Both instruments make it easy to program swirly pads, good leads and basses. Both instruments have some pretty playable presets right off the bat and you can do a lot with both.

Ultimately, if price is a concern, then go with the Triton, it's a great synth, and will serve you well for years. $800 is definitely a great price for it so it does tip the "bang for the buck" scale towards the Triton. On the other hand if you want the latest and greatest then get the Motif ES. It will give you punchier sounds, better FX and cleaner sounding outputs.

My 2 or 3 cents.

I have a motif6 and a tritonle.
If you are most concerned with acoustic & electric pianos and acoustic type music I would go with the Motif.
However $800 for a triton is obviously a good deal.
As far as the ES being $500 more, it does have more sounds than the motif and more polyphony, but that does not mean the motif6 would not be a good board at around $1500 right now.
