Hey everyone, first post here! Just discovered this site a few days ago and Im stoked!

Quick background of myself, this should help you tailor your answers......

I was big time into recording music in the years of 2000 and 2004. I went to full sail in 2002 and graduated in the beginning of 2003, I had a boat load of loans and also took more loans out to fund a "home studio"....

Well, in the beginning of 2005, i was still young and my parents were moving to florida in which I had to go since I still couldnt afford to live on my own...

Between only finding internships in Chicago and no basements in florida, I sold EVERYTHING I had and just fell out of the scene!

But now Im back and relearning everything! If I had known about this site before Full Sail I may have saved a lot of cash :-)

Well thats my background, now heres my question :)

Im getting back into the game, slowly but surely. Im pretty broke right now. I purchased an Mbox mini and now I need a good, decent, inexpensive mic.

I am looking at those MXL mics, particularly the 990/991 combo, but am not sure if I should go that route...??

What do you guys think, IM looking to keep my first purchase under 120 if at all possible.... i dont even have monitors yet :-)

Thanks a lot guys and IM open to ALL suggestions, this site is great!!!

Jim

You for sure could do better .
But the $120. limit is a bad thing.
Why not save up and get something in the middle of the road instead of purchasing now.

The best cheaper condensor mic I've ever heard is the Studio Projects B1. The AT2020 isn't bad either.

Just buy used. I've seen a lot of MXL mics on craigslist lately. Check the MSRP though as a lot of these folks bought them at full retail / GC prices. And they want you to buy them at that inflated price. I've been tempted myself, but I have better mics than some of those, so it's not really a pocket burning hole at the moment.

No basements... Sometimes I forget how low and flat florida is at time. Space mountain (disney world) being one of the two highest peaks in the state. Or at least was back in 198? something.

For the same cash, get a used SM58 and SM57. At a minimum you should be able to sell them at costs. So from a certain POV, not really money spent. MXL mics, they're likely to flood the used market for years to come as others upgrade. Although some of them are pretty decent. v67 / 603. At least based on the few samples I've heard. I've never owned/used them myself.
