LeVeLar Tube compressor @$99 vs. RNC
Blue Max Presonus @ $145 vs. RNC

dbx Mini-pre @$99 vs. DMP3

There is a sale at my local music store and I was wondering if anyone has used the above and might want to comment.

RNC

With the RNC there are no artifacts of compression; you'll keep asking if it's on. For $200 it is an amazing deal and i don't think you'll find too many people that are unhappy with it. Though i haven't heard the others i would imagine since they are tube they are going to give you a more colored sound which might be desirable. So to answer your question definately consider all of them if you have the opportunity to listen. Go listen to the ones on sale keeping in mind that the RNC is almost totally invisible. You cannot hear that it is working until you turn it off (unless you dial in some extreme settings). In alot of cases this is a good thing.

What would you be doing with a compressor?

If you get a chance to listen to those others post back what your impressions are.

Uh . . . let's see . . .

No,
No,
and uh, No.

Hope that helps.

Chessrock, always succinct and to the point. Appreciate the response. Spiral thanks for the review.

I realize that all gear has its use but I am looking for overall the most versitile mic pre and compressor under $300 for each.

Everyone here at HR.com has pretty much recommended the RNC and DMP3 but before I pop for them I wanted to see what might be just as good and maybe less money.

Thanks.

Hmmm. ??? How about "almost" as good?

In that case, there's the Behringer Composer Pro comp, which is "almost" as good as the RNC, and it goes for around $100. Similarly, the Audio Buddy is probably "almost" as good as the DMP3 at $100.

Don't know about the Behringer compressor as I have never used one (I'm not a Behringer basher though,I just don't know).I do know that the RNC gets universally good reviews from everyone who has used one.It is about the only product I've seen get that kind of response so that should tell you something.

I love my Audio Buddy,I haven't heard the mini dbx but it looks an awful lot like an Art Toob MP which I wasted a hundred dollars on.The Art might be usable as a DI or as a effect but as a mic pre it sucks IMO.For the money the Audio Buddy is hard to beat.
